A possible Vayne rework

Why rework Vayne? The main reason I believe Vayne needs to be reworked is because her lore and in-game identities are completely different. In the lore Shauna Vayne is a highly trained demon hunter, who's trying to hunt down Evelynn ever since she killed her parents in their estate in Demacia. Also, there's this specific quote:

Even Demacia's tall walls couldn't keep dark magic from creeping through the cracks. It may disguise itself with subtleties or keep to shadowed corners, but Vayne knew it was there.

This is instantly followed by And she was done being afraid. But none of this is reflected in her gameplay. On the rift Vayne isn't a demon hunter. She doesn't sense stealthed enemies lurking in the shadows even despite wearing those special Nightseeker Googles of hers. All she's known about is her obscene True Damage and stealth. Simply an anti-tank hyper-carry.

Another reason is her Silver Bolts. They used to be something unique about Vayne. Now everyone and their Ghost Dog does True Damage either through crit builds, abilities or Conqueror (some via a mix of them or even all three). Vayne's Silver Bolts scale with a percentage of your maximum Health and since it's True Damage there is no way you can itemize against it. They're even an on-hit effect and a Vayne with stacked Rageblade is going to trigger them every second basic attack (instead of third).

A third, but minor reason, is that she's getting old and needs a visual update, even if she's far from the top of the list. Her most recent skins, like PROJECT, really showcase the potential of what she could look like.

What should the rework focus on? First and foremost, it would bring her gameplay and character in line to match her lore and at least make an attempt at balancing her better than she is right now. It would also be wise to try and keep her Silver Bolts under some form as they're unique to her still, but should rework them into something Vayne's opponents can deal with. The update to her visuals comes naturally with a rework.

With all of the above out of the way I would like to put my vision of what her abilities should be reworked into.

PASSIVE: Perception for the Dark Vayne is capable of detecting stealthed enemy units within her sight range (1200 units). She is granted obscured vision of any stealthed enemy that moves or performs any action, which doesn't break their stealth. This does not include any area of which Vayne doesn't have direct line of sight, but it does include unwarded bushes.

Final Hour: Vayne is granted obscured sight of all enemies within 1200 units for the duration, irrespective of terrain, and includes the fog of war.

Perception for the Dark would work similarly to Rek'Sai's Tremor Sense: https://i.imgur.com/nXyLLfF.jpg

In the above image you can clearly see the enemy champion walk past her just ouside visual range. They are marked via a large purple circle. In Vayne's case the champion would only be marked in this way if they are stealthed. In any other case they would be inside visual range. Now, if there were a stealthed champion north or south/southwest of the bush Rek'Sai is in Vayne would be able to sense them, but if they're directly behind any terrain she won't be able to. Once she activates Final Hour, however, she will be able to sense any champion within 1200 units irrespective of terrain and whether they're stealthed or not. What I'm debating is whether to let Vayne sense stealthed champions within, say, 600 units even if they're not in her line of sight. That would be more useful to her, but it may make her too strong vs stealth champions in the jungle.

Q - Tumble: Vayne rolls a short distance in the target direction, resetting her basic attack timer. Cooldown and cost remain unchanged.

Condemn: Tumble's cooldown is reduced by 50%. Final Hour: Tumble enhances Vayne's next basic attack within 3 seconds to deal 25% increased damage.

There are several changes to Tumble:

  1. Firstly, it scales with Vayne's own basic attack damage instead of her AD - so it can and will critically strike whenever her basic attack does. This results in higher benefit from actually building Critical Strike like a normal ADC would, although it makes it RNG reliant with anything less than 100% Chance.
  2. The 50% cooldown reduction is only given around the marked target, which she is hunting.
  3. Instead of stealth, Tumble may now pass impassable terrain.
  4. The bonus damage is only given while Final Hour is active.

What those changes aim at is to retain her pre Q buff level of mobility while not destroying counterplay - currently she gains both stealth and 50% reduction on its cooldown, which can make her impossible to target from the midgame onwards if she's good. It is too much power to have while dishing out the level of DPS she currently is capable of, and especially on a champion that's supposed to be easily focused if they make a mistake. With those changes she will only gain CDR around the marked target and will not be stealthed at any point of the game. She also won't have access to Tumble's bonus damage without Final Hour.

W - Silver Bolts: After a 0.75 second delay Vayne shoots a Silver Bolt from her Crossbow in the target direction, which stops on the first enemy champion hit and does 50/80/110/140/170 + (75% bonus AD) physical damage and applies Grievous Wounds. Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds. Cost: 75 Mana Maximum Range: 550 units

Condemn: Does True Damage to the marked champion and additionally slows them by 35/45/55/65/75% for 0.75 seconds, but costs 25 additional Mana.

The original Silver Bolts are primarily as strong as they are due to essetially being a passive enhancer to Vayne's basic attacks, which applies on-hit stacks. There is no counterplay to such a thing other than sitting out of basic attack range - if it were physical damage you could at least mitigate some of it, but it isn't the case. When I rework them I want to let Vayne still have access to some True Damage via them, but as you can see in my case there's a lot of drawbacks to it. The ability is not only a skillshot on a high cooldown, it also does less damage and has a cast delay of nearly a full second during which enemies can dodge it. The True Damage and slow are also only applicable against the marked target and doesn't scale with the target's stats, so it's equally effective against a tank and against a squishy, while a frontliner may body-block it to protect their allies. You may ask how the game is going to apply the extra cost if you don't have enough Mana for the bonus effects (since it's not a targetted ability) - it simply won't apply the bonus effects to the marked target and will cost the normal 75 Mana instead of 100. To summarize, I changed the original OP, purely offensive and passive ability into a untility one, which is at its strongest when used against the target Vayne is hunting.

E - Condemn: PASSIVE: Vayne is allowed to select an enemy champion, which she marks. A circle with a 550 unit radius is created around the marked champion. Whenever Vayne is inside this circle her Tumble and Silver Bolts gain bonus effects. She is also given a 45 Movement Speed bonus whenever the marked champion is visible through normal sight or revealed and stands no farther than 1000 units from her. ACTIVE: Vayne shoots a heavy bolt in the target direction, which knocks the first enemy champion hit 550 units back. If they hit a wall or another champion both are stunned (well, you can't stun a wall, but you know what I mean :D) for 1.5 seconds. Cooldown and cost unchanged.

The function of Condemn's active effect is still the same - except it's a skillshot, so people can actually juke it. And if they don't you can stun up to two people with it so long as you manage to knock the first one into the second victim. A two-man stun on a glass cannon might seem pretty OP, but this will probably be only true for lower ELO, since better opponents would know better than to give any opportunities for it. In addition to that, Vayne can mark one enemy champion, which she gains bonus effects against, similar to Kindred's passive. And unlike the latter it has virtually no cooldown, so Vayne can change targets in the midst of battle as she needs to.

R - Final Hour: For the next 8/10/12 seconds Vayne uses her Crossbow instead of her Armbow, gaining 20/40/60 AD and 100 range on her basic attacks, Silver Bolts and Condemn. Takedowns on a champion damaged by Vayne in the last 3 seconds extends the duration of Final Hour by 4 seconds.

More or less the same as now, but grants a bit more AD and a slight increase in range in exchange for not granting stealth and tripled movement speed bonus.

You forgot a choice in the pull:

"Vayne doesn't need a rework desperately, but if she were to receive one it should be yours."

Absolutely amazing ideas. Her w is quite op, but it was unique (oh, was I mad when kai'sa came out...). By making it into a skill shot definitely balance it out, but I do suggest giving it a lower cd (or reduce the cd by 3 seconds or so if it hit a marked target). 10 seconds is long, and it means it can only be triggered twice at max during a 2v2 all in, which is definitely less than ideal for an all in marksman (markswoman?) like her.

Her e also might not work as a skill shot for many reasons:

  1. Her w is already a skill shot, and having two very similar skill shots (in terms of range and aiming) just isn't really fun to play with.
  2. It is hard to use even when it is a point and click. In the sense that you have to aim which why the enemy is knocked back, it is already a "skill" shot.

I also don't think it should stun both champions. Originality is important, and that is just too similar to bard. I suggest stunning the champion that got hit by e if he/she collide with another champion instead of stunning both.

Great work, here, have the thumbs up :D [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I agree with the perception of the dark thing, but otherwise her attacks are fine. BUT SHE STILL TOTALLY NEEDS A REWORK! Especially after Riot dropped that bomb on us during Evelyn's rework that EVELYN KILLED HER PARENTS AND TURNED HER INTO DEMACIAN BATMAN! The splash art of her old skins like the aristocrat and vindicator and dragonslayer are wack and outdated, her in game animations aren't unique (especially with the valentine skin, there were no heart animation or recall), and her interactions need to be updated, especially with Vayne's true enemy running around flirting with everyone. If you ever want to rp or talk about it more with me, I have an rp thread in the roleplay called Evil Lurks Around Every Corner.
