"this role isn't really enjoyed enough to be played, so every few games we're going to force you"
It's no surprise to anyone that support is the hole in dynamic quo, with it being the least popular role by far. Many would say it takes a special type of player to want to support, I'd argue that it instead takes a special few types of champions
These champions all have ally utility or hard cc/zoning with low cooldowns, but with only the exceptions of champions like lux, none really fit the most commonly enjoyed play styles of the league community.
So what does this say?
to me it says people want to carry, or at least feel like they're carrying.
Most players don't want to go 1/2/28 and have lowest damage, as sad as that is (Because that score is ballerrr)
My suggestion is to make more champions who play similarly to Marksmen and assassins, with high base damage and low scaling damage but still provide scaling CC or buffs/heals.
maybe a support with elements of fighters, or a few more burst mages.
maybe a support with a passive that provides portions of their stats to nearby allies and functions sort of like an adc
How about an assassin style mobility tank that focuses on interceptions and gains bonus damage based on how low their adc is on health
Maybe a mirror mage who can reflect/absorb offensive enemy abilities and buff themselves or allies based on the effects that would have hit them (Damage for heals, slow for speedup, ect)
As much as i love taric, sona, sora, janna and the rest, i can see why the role is not for everyone, and since the rest of the player base either has to wait for a support for a pretty long amount of time, then maybe we need to open up the role for people who would be more interested.
I know that Riot generally makes champions with their playstyle's playerbase in mind, but maybe its time encourage some of those assassin mains to pick up a fun new support, and not by saying essentially "this role isn't really enjoyed enough to be played, so every few games we're going to force you to play it"
