Too many people just down voting concepts without a reason. The people who post ideas here (myself included) want actual feedback. Just a random down vote doesn't do anything to help.

A solution is still possible though: I think people just need to get into the habit of commenting, and upvoting things that appear to be well-reasoned and people who are up for meaningful discussion -- even when they don't entirely like the idea or agree with the person. If we build an environment that supports effort rather than outcome, we can probably overrule the downvote fairies and get a functioning forum.
I know I personally tend to upvote any thread where there was clearly effort put in, and where the poster seems interested in having a conversation about the suggestion, even if he/she and I don't entirely agree.

That's very true. I'll admit: I tend not to give comments or upvotes to people that I know don't respond well to actual discussion of their ideas.

i am one of those people who dont want to read a long post, not because i dont ahve the time but because i just dont want to,I read bits and i scroll threw comments and see what people say then up or down it based on that, or the title in general

Just out of curiousity, why even bother if you don't care to read the post in question? Not judgemental or anything: just honestly kind of puzzled about why you'd invest any effort looking at comments of a thread you're not interested in reading.

i dont realy look at the posts or comments in a thread that dont interest me, unless i see that they are up for long periods of time, but if they are less then 3 paragraphs i usally read based on the lenth just to see what someone has to say if it be educated and not DER DER DER, but if its more than 2/3rds my screen leanth i usally exit out, but if i do seem interested then i will read a majority unless its like REALLY long

I'm not having a go at you but this is another issue I have with topics like this. It's people telling others how they should have to act for them. You can't tell anyone they're not allowed to dislike something, much like you can't tell someone they have to like something. How they express this is entirely up to them.

You'll notice I specifically mentioned that I wasn't judging him at all: I was just honestly curious. I just always like to understand other viewpoints / methods of doing things. It's a curse. :P

Lonely Flame5 votesBut sometimes the comment doesn't actually give feedback. If someone says "This is dumb" that's no more helpful than a downvote. In fact that could cause potential arguments than if you had just let it be. I've seen plenty of people respond to feedback with abuse that they didn't know that they were talking about.
That said, there's a lot of threads that get posted that are dumb. The example I've given before is "MAKE X SKIN FOR X CHAMP" and the description is "PLS DO IT RITO I WILL GIVE YOU ALL MY MONEY!1" why do I need to comment on that to downvote it? (I can literally see 3 threads like this on the forums recently by the way) Clearly the poster hasn't put time an effort into it, so why should I be forced to say 'that sounds bad' to downvote it? See the issue? There's a lot of spam on these forums or people who spam the forums, and people up/downvoting it are their way of regulating it. Sure, a lot of stuff gets downvoted, but stuff does come through. For example this guy from yesterday. I had a lot of spare time yesterday (ah render times) and that was honestly the post that had the most effort put in, and it showed. That's not to say I spent the day sitting there downvoting everything, but I can look at a lot of them and think 'yeh that sounds stupid'
Now even more relevant is this thread. I disagree with it. There's been a big attitude recently on here about downvotes being an issue with petitions to get it removed and what not. It's little a little pixelated up and down arrow. I've no idea why people get so worried about it. So what if your idea didn't succeed on the internet.

I'll admit...I was curious to see how long this thread continued before someone brought this up. I'll be honest though: I haven't noticed ANY trend in the downvotes my threads receive (when they receive them), so I'm skeptical. I do think the long conversations about this tend to derail other threads though, which is unfortunate.
