What if we used Blood Moon mode to make URF better?

What if: When champ select starts up we see a pool of 30 random champions. This pool is different every lobby and both sides have the same pool Each side bans 5 of the champions in the pool, then blind pick between the remaining 20. Dodge timers increased by a lot

This way we can actually have some diversity, we get to pick our champions, and the ARAM only accounts don't get a massive advantage.

Yeah, except that they'll never be able to code that in time. I'd be happy with it just randoming from the whole champion pool instead of just the ones you own.

Tyaldan3 votes

same, and id love to see that in aram too. You know, the ALL RANDOM all mid thats not really all, and doesnt feel that random (i swear it feels weighted towards the free week champs to me)

ninjaroxas4 votes

I swear it's the same thing for me but with arurf, i got diana like 6 times and i don't own her. How ever i don't like the idea of every champion being available(in either mode) because there is a pool of champions i'd die before playing

Velzard of Koz2 votes

Well they might not code it in time for next session of ARURF, but they may use it in future similar to how URF turned into ARURF. Also, coding this doesn't seem that hard. It's not like they'd need to redesign entire champ select unless they spaghetti'd it and didn't follow main pillars of code design. There already is asset of preventing you from picking already picked champ (Normal Blind) they'd just modify it to watch both your team and enemy team picks (for 20 different champs or maybe make it blind so 1 champ per team, but it can be picked by both you and enemy making it easier to code). There already is asset of restricted champion pool from Blood Moon, they'd just write few new lines of code to make the pool variable (in case they forced it fixed for BM, yet again thing of bad code design but I doubt they did), borrowing randomizing system from ARAM/ARURF to pick pool of randomized champs.

At the rate urf is, they should be able to.

Last urf was last fall. The one before that was during summer.

Riot doesn't like urf.

Ooh, that sounds good. I think I would prefer pure randomness, but I'm not everyone, and this would be interesting. I honestly hate (non-AR) URF though, because I didn't get to play the first round, so the second time was without the fond memories, and it felt like normal games except if I picked champions I liked I lost.

TyrekGoldenspear6 votes

They might have made this new game mode with experimentation of the sort in place for URF.

But upvoted just in case they didn't.

zlumpy5 votes

Just make it true arurf. Unlock all champs and make it always random.

Ok sure but why4 votes

i miss urf

This is a great idea! Solves most the problems, is unique to URF, and would offer a fun time from the get go. I think 40 might bee a better number tho with 10 bans coming soon

DIV1D34 votes

Literally any solution that combines choice and diversity in URF is infinitely better than Random or Blind Pick. Draft pick is the very basic step, but a random pool of champs along with bans would be very good for the health of the game mode.

DrCyanide4 votes

Pick as in Draft Pick or pick as in Blind Pick?

If Blind Pick you'd better like mirror matchups.

If Draft Pick you'd better hope you're not the last pick getting the left over Champion no one else wanted. That could be solved by increasing it to 40 Champions though.

Hellioning3 votes

And it drastically increases the amount of time in lobby.

For a 'fun' game mode, I don't see how that's an advantage.

THE RlVER KlNG12 votes

would you rather play vs. ezreal hecarim evelynn sona fizz zed every game?

and never see 40+ other champions, while living in a veritable hell versus all the ridiculously op URF picks?

Escheton2 votes

Yes. Don't care what you pick long as I am not forced to play Yorick or somesuch.

Melledoneus9 votes

Yorick in URF is pretty strong actually.

SociopathFriend2 votes

Current Yorick might be- but I remember trying pre-rework Yorick in URF back when it first came out and I found it extremely lackluster.

50000000000000004 votes

Really? The old Yorick should have been much more oppressive I think.

SociopathFriend1 votes

Nah, only one ghoul of any kind can be up at a time, so you ended up just screwing yourself over by spamming ghoul abilities because they wouldn't get to actually attack.

50000000000000001 votes

Was that an URF specific nerf? I remember you were supposed to keep as many ghouls as possible at all times as Yorick normally.

Junkο2 votes

Old Yorick was OP as fuck in URF. No skillshots got past his and you won every AA fight cause you had like 6 ghouls up all the time.

Mostro Gallo3 votes

No?

Only one type of each ghoul could be active at a time. E.g., you could not have multiple famines, pestilences, etc.

Well he was... not anymore ;-; rip my perma ghoul army of 1v5

Elewd3 votes

the aram only accounts dont have "that" much of an advantage in arurf, since a lot of the really strong aram champs arn't AS strong in urf compared to other picks.

TheLastShadow453 votes

Most of the champions that people buy for ARAM only accounts are godly in Urf as well.

SirTeemoMushroom3 votes

urf? what is this? :)

Eeyore3 votes

I would almost prefer if the pool wasn't random - but instead the bottom 50% of champions by popularity. When released, this would be based on normal queues/last years - and then the list would update periodically.

I think requiring the enemy team to ban from an entirely random pool would create a bit of a burden of searching who is available, especially since (I don't think) 30 champions fits on one screen.

Thalassa1 votes

Boy can i wait for nidalee to be in urf every game!

Eeyore2 votes

There could still be bans, I suppose, but I imagine she'd alternate out between updates.

FlameanatorX3 votes

This is a really good idea, however, I think the champion pool should be somewhat larger than 30 (20 after bans). That way there's a lower chance of only being able to select from champions you don't know/don't like/are really UP on urf (like Yas). I'd say 40 would be a good number.

You only need the pool to be small enough that it's unlikely more than a couple OP picks and no super toxic ones get through.

They could maybe even add an algorithm to cause slightly better role distribution of random champ pool (between mages, marksmen, tanks, etc.). I personally enjoyed bruiser/tank/support champions the most in ARAM, while I'm sure others enjoyed adcs/mages/supports or assassins/skirmishers/bruisers, or whatever.

Also, I came up with a semi-random champ select idea for URF myself, as well as a poll for people to vote on what form they think would make URF the most fun. I want to know what you think OP if you're still paying attention to this thread after 5 months. Semi-random URF champ select

LordSirChipmunk2 votes

Love it, but I have a quick question: why the increased dodge timers?

Adriqnohee13 votes

To punish those that dodge when they don't get what they want.

Petix Epsilon2 votes

Or both teams get their 5 bans then when there are 20 champs left they are randomly assigned

Shadòw1 votes

Blind Pick this way would end like:

"Wow i wanted that gg" "give me that pls" "no" "wow only shit champion left, i troll" locks Yasuo summoner 1 summoner 11

i think the classic ARAM way with rerolls worked quite fine

Automated Riven1 votes

thats fine .. just allow doubles on champions. that way there can be anywhere from 1-5 of the random champions. meaning you could potentially see all for one ultra rapid fire mode

Shadòw2 votes

so 5 times Fizz?

no thanks

Automated Riven1 votes

then use of of the 5 bans to ban fizz

Shadòw1 votes

it would still result in the majority picking the most OP champ of the pool.

Aeszarck1 votes

How would the pool choose Champions? What if 30 Champions were picked that I did not own, or what if the ones that I did own were banned? If you're going to choose Champions that only players in the match own, how do you randomly do that? What if Player X has only 20 Champions and Player Y has 20 different Champions and the pool chooses only a few Champions from each of their pools? Those Champions could be banned out or picked before the players have a chance to get their Champion.

Automated Riven1 votes

pool is completly random from my understanding

ValyrianBlade1 votes

I'd rather limit the bans to 1 or 2 per team (since you're already drastically limiting the pool). I'd also probably be disappointed pretty quickly - when you own <50 champions it's not unlikely you won't have any decent champions for the game-mode available.

I personally saw nothing wrong with regular URF though. All the haters complaining about the meta there - why can't we have a special game mode with a meta? So what if people actually play that mode to win. It was fun. It was mostly fun for me because I never try to abuse OP champion picks in regular play, but in URF I'd abuse OP picks and not feel like a tool for it.

Pôro1 votes

IIRC the champions in Bloodmoon pool were in the free rotation, but here it would be 30 random. and not everyone has all champions. so I don't know if they're going to put all champions on free rotation.

FlameanatorX1 votes

One alternative to this that's similar, is you could give each player a few random choices each match, then let everyone ban out of the combined champ pool. Kind of a half-way measure between this and AR URF. I think either one would be great though.
