Concerning Reds and avatars

I made a post in another thread and was asked by Meddler to repost it here for more visibility.

ya know, I think one aspect of why the angry players are getting annoyed at the "fluff" red posts is because no one can recognize the reds anymore.

See, back in the old days, the reds posted fluff like this too, but back then reds and only reds had avatars. This allowed the community to gain some form of familiarity with the reds, and learn each red's particular personality and attach it to an image. This also gave rise to some fun memes/jokes like IronStylus being the parrot lord or parrot god. And every time I saw anivia, I knew it was morello, and if I saw fiddle sticks, I knew it'd be phreak talking about teemo or tons of dmg. And if I saw that vintage annie pic, I knew it'd be the lord and master of trolls Zileas.

But now, with everyone having an avatar, and the reds avatars looking just like everyone elses avatar, it's really hard to tell at a glance who is posting and what they are particularly knowledgeable in. So in that respect, I believe communication has deteriorated. Reds are becoming more of just that a "red" post rather than being a post with an actual personality behind it, things are just getting blurred together.

if anyone else has anything to contribute, please do so.

I think it gets to a larger question of, what is the purpose of avatars on League? The base ones say "I have started the League client at one point". The Team Builder ones say, "I played five games in a role". IIRC the rest say, "Kilroy wuz here 12/25/14".

If an avatar is a statement of who you are and what you are about, IMO there are few LoL avatars that communicate anything of that nature. This is why League needs honest-to-God achievements (which tbh recent event icons have become more and more) and champ/faction/whatever icons.

I highly doubt that the anger towards a lack of communication here is centered around the fact that the community is to stupid to recognize a name over a picture.
