Why 0 or (-) post ratings don't belong here...

One man killing sprees - If I wanted to I could kill so many posts all by myself with a single click. Take any one post with a 1 rating, down vote it, it's dead.

Let the post die on its own and simply arange "1"s by time posted.

Do I need to remind you of the toxic people in this community that would probably down vote posts just because they share the same thread as their's?

Tbh, in my experience, thoughtful posts tend to end up getting discussion and upvotes if enough people see them. That is, as a whole the community tends to upvote the right kind of posts. The problem, as you point out, is that single downvotes can kill threads.

I think we should do something like 'protection from early downvotes,' where downvotes don't start to matter until a couple hours after the thread is posted

They should just remove the ability to vote without reading.

Champion Concepts has an issue due to this. When someone posts a new concept, there's a 50/50 chance it gets hit with an immediate random downvote and that's enough to bury it.

Also, people tend to downvote threads that were already downvoted and upvote threads that were upvoted. You can test this by making the same thread twice with a few days in between, downvoting the first thread and using a smurf to upvote the second thread.
