If there's one thing the boards need
One thing at all....
Get rid of "sort by hot" as the default and return to "sort by new" as the default.

Why not just change your own sorting and leave it at that?
Most people who come on the forums don't actually do it for very long (they're not regular users); they come on, read a few threads, leave a comment or two, and come back a month later. For these people hot sorting works great.
For you and I, who use the forums more, hot sorting doesn't work as well, for the reasons you said in your other post (we've read it all already). Therefore it makes sense for us to change to "new" or "recent." But just because new is better than hot for ME, doesn't mean that I think it should be the default for everyone.
Because that's too easy, isn't it?

Because "New" actually permits discussion on things that are outside the popular discussions. New permits the flow of ideas and thoughts that "Hot" never will have.
..And without a doubt, promoting discussion of things outside of the popular is great for you and me.
But does the average poster really want to see a random collection of posts, or do they want to see the most popular discussions, which are presumably interesting and of at least reasonable quality?
I guess part of the reason I disagree with you is that I haven't really found that good discussion is stifled in this format. If I start finding that I can't find good, varied, discussion, I'll change my opinion and very much agree with you.
That goes against their lifestream philosophy.
