Thumbs up - the "recent" view mode is really good and effective. I'd even suggest it to be default.

I really like the new icons in the feed and I like using the recent view mode where I can actually see what is being discussed. Because while the amount of votes is an important information, it doesn't see how much the posts interests me, but how much people agree with it.

This function is one of things that are really made right here and work as needed. I think, however, that this is not the default view on the site and I think it should be. Even a newcomer should see what are current updated discussions.

The 'recent' view was the default sorting on the old forums -- part of the reason it was changed is that it opens up a whole 'nother can of worms.

Namely, the scenario where people 'bump' their posts with basically-empty comments to push them to the top of the sorting list. It allowed a very small number of active people to totally dominate what content was shown on the front page, which was...not necessarily quality content. The 'recent' sorting option works now because people don't bump any more, because recent isn't the default, so not enough people use it to make bumping worth it.
