[BUG] So sad... You are not authorised

MXXIV··28 votes·15,753 views

Ocassionally, I vote and an error with exhaust icon pops up. So far, I failed to make a screenshot or reproduce it by scripting the site.

But the underlying AJAX request returns 405 Method Not Allowed:

{"errorMessage":"Vote creation is not permitted for application:CODE_HERE discussion:CODE_HERE","errorCode":"UNABLE_TO_CREATE_VOTE"}

Wtf guys really. Probably your database is too slow or something. I keep firebug allways enabled on this site so I can see your bugs. Please start fixing them already.

Thanks a lot for this contribution.

Just doing my part in the world.

There are at least a couple of different reasons why you might not be able to vote on a discussion or comment:

  1. Voting is disabled on that discussion because it is turned off at the Board level or on the discussion itself.
  2. You got rate-limited for trying to vote on comments/discussions too quickly.

We need to do a better job of providing relevant error messages!

MXXIV1 votes

Thank you for your input, but these are really just the things we have figured out. This is all about somebody going into the server scripts and check where the message I reported is being generated. I couldn't make debugging easier for you - normal users really don't go all firebug on broken pages.

It's not 5 year olds that's the problem, it's 12 year olds trying to spam

MXXIV3 votes

So let them do it. It's their choice to distribute votes at random.

Daen6 votes

The question becomes whether the current implementation is worth having. I run into this message really often and I don't even vote all that frequently, it's important to suss out whether this is unduly affecting normal users. It's a balancing act of how annoying the rate limit is compared to how annoying vote spam would be, basically.

I've had this after just first logging into boards, if I wait for a few seconds after initially trying to upvote/downvote it lets me after that.

RiotMaliceCity4 votes

That one is a longstanding bug we have not had the time to track down yet. It is definitely on our radar!

MXXIV2 votes

I get this error every time when I vote on a post that doesn't exist (like the recently deleted post). So probably search around there.

RiotMaliceCity3 votes

This is actually the expected behavior, though we probably should have a better error message for this case.

MXXIV1 votes

Well yeah, you should, but man I know it's expected. But that was my point - obviously, if this error is supposed to occur when post doesn't exist, the unexpected error means that the system failed to fetch the post. Since it occurs at random, I'd blame the database.

Don't you have something like mysql error logs? Sometimes, things like "Mysql server has gone away" appear there.

Downvoting as off topic.

Daen2 votes

Btdubs, this is unnecessary. If you're downvoting or reporting content for being off topic, spam, etc., just downvote or report it. There's no need to add a comment that is, for all intents and purposes, spam just to prove your action.

MXXIV2 votes

No, it is not. I want the user to know why I downvoted/reported their post so that they know I didn't do it deliberately. Anybody who downvotes/deletes without a warning and explanation as a coward in my eyes. This is something I learned on Stack Exchange, where you are encouraged to leave a suggestion for the OP when you downvote their post.

Did you downvote it accidentally?

Assuming our community grows to encompass a decent population, that might be fifteen people commenting on a single reply that should not be present on a given thread to begin with. In my eyes, that just causes more off topic chatter than the original reply had to begin with. Right now I'm being pretty hypocritical, I'll admit, because none of this is related to the OP nor the board itself.

The good thing about the Boards platform is that content is addressed extremely quickly. If it doesn't belong, a report will get it removed with a ~5 minute turnaround. I'm not sure how Stack Exchange functions, but generally speaking content here is removed fast enough that feedback on clear breaches in conduct is somewhat unnecessary.

MXXIV1 votes

Sometimes these fifteen people may just upvote first reply that explains why they downvoted. Anyway, people just like feedback. I've seen many people asking "why the downvotes" - so I answer before being asked.

Daen2 votes

Which begs the question, why is this feedback having to come from players rather than being built into the content management system?

MXXIV1 votes

Because nobody would vote if that required an essay to write I guess. I take explaining my votes as my own choice to be more polite to others.

Daen2 votes

My question is more along the lines of why the moderation system doesn't provide adequate feedback, rather than players being required to write something in order to vote.

MXXIV2 votes

Dunno. I wasn't talking about this. We were talking about my comments along my actions. Contribute this thoughts in threads about moderation, there's many of them.

I have a similar problem sometimes. I'm from EUW, but I mostly write on the NA boards because that's where the most interesting stuff happens. Sometimes I get the "you're not authorized" message. For some reason, when I then reload the page it shows me as logged out, and on the top left corner it says "North America". Only when I change the location to "EU WEST (English)" again can I write new messages and up/downvote and stuff like that. It seems to happen at random, but it's really annoying because when I've just written a comment I have to cut it, change my region once more and then paste it anew.

RiotMaliceCity2 votes

Hey Shierusensei, this is an unfortunate side effect of the way we handle logins across multiple regions. Often you will click to another page on the website (via a link on Boards or somewhere else) and it changes your region on you.

We are totally aware of this problem and the pain it causes players, and are working with some other teams to address it in a standard way across all League of Legends websites and regions.

Baitsa Dasuto3 votes

Oh, that could be it. Thanks, Bear Hat Alice, and thanks again for the quick answer. =) Have a cookie for your troubles. item 2010

This caused me to vote on my and other's post multiple times before I realised that my login was changed - originally I thought I just forgot to vote.

I got this a lot last week. Seems to happen in spurts :/

junglerboy161 votes

This happens a lot if you upvote/downvote several things in a very short amount of time. The way around it is to just keep clicking the up vote button until it registers (usually about 5 clicks for me, sometimes more, sometimes less).

MXXIV2 votes

But other times I can upvote/downvote things consecutively without problems. Also, there's a different error if your really vote too fast:

###429 Too Many Requests

{"errorMessage":"Trying to post too many times","errorCode":"TOO_MANY_REQUESTS"}

So I guess they either use wrong error or there is another problem.

junglerboy161 votes

Interesting.

I had this in Fantasy LCS too. I waited like 3 minutes and it still showed up. Also a similar message popped up when I attempted drafting people for my own league so I had to let it randomly distribute players.

I always laugh at this message.
