There are two things about Boards that bother me. The first is that you have the ability to up/down vote your own posts. Every single posted board starts at +1 because it auto-boosts yours, 1 is the new 0, 0 is the new -1...and it seems really narcissistic.
The other thing that's irritating, specifically as a theory- and math-crafter, is that asterisks were chosen for Bold/Italics. Asterisks. You know, the usual PC function for multiplication.

+1, this bothers me too. I would much rather just start at zero (mathematical home) and not automatically upvote myself. It becomes especially amusing when users are able to basically downvote themselves twice (+1 to 0, 0 to -1).

Interesting, I have never had an issue with this (though I'm also not a mathcrafter). What would you propose as a better solution? Asterisks are used pretty widely to show emphasis, so to me it makes sense having that functionality here.
Ohohoho man, if you think efficiency is what riot's worried about, have you seen this site on mobile? It takes like a minute to load topics sometimes. Anyway there's the nice little "I" icon below the post you can just click, or if riot knew about keyboard shortcuts, ctrl I would be a thing (why is it not a thing?). Shortcuts are the most efficient, even if the format was like [italicizeallofthetextbetweenthesetwoobnoxiouslylongtags][/icantbearsedtoretypethatnonsense] just ctrl I and that'd appear, and sure it'd look bad, but just one button press and it's all there.
Basically, if riot implemented keyboard shortcuts, they could have whatever they want representing formatting. For some reason, they don't, so they're forced to make it one character things, which can inconvenience people trying to use those characters for things other than formatting. I don't know, i just hate it when things are designed so that I have to work around the design to do certain things that are not even an issue on the rest of the internet.
