There are two things about Boards that bother me. The first is that you have the ability to up/down vote your own posts. Every single posted board starts at +1 because it auto-boosts yours, 1 is the new 0, 0 is the new -1...and it seems really narcissistic.
The other thing that's irritating, specifically as a theory- and math-crafter, is that asterisks were chosen for Bold/Italics. Asterisks. You know, the usual PC function for multiplication.

+1, this bothers me too. I would much rather just start at zero (mathematical home) and not automatically upvote myself. It becomes especially amusing when users are able to basically downvote themselves twice (+1 to 0, 0 to -1).

Interesting, I have never had an issue with this (though I'm also not a mathcrafter). What would you propose as a better solution? Asterisks are used pretty widely to show emphasis, so to me it makes sense having that functionality here.

Well, I can see the logic for that too. Admittedly, they set it up so it's not a problem with Bold text; it takes double asterisks on both ends for that. Maybe we could use a double slash for Italics, //like that//

I don't see what's wrong with tags like [i][/i], things that won't actually get in the way of any sort of typing. If it's too complicated we have buttons down there to italicize text. Asterisks are also widely used for actions like *throws rock at person who designed the boards this way* (btw you can use a \ then a * to keep the star, but it's still a stupid workaround to a stupid problem that shouldn't exist)

It's not really that it's complicated, it's that it's inefficient. *Comment* is two formatting characters, [i]comment[/i] is seven; it's more than three times as inefficient. That's not even including the fact that [i][/i] requires a lot of movement all on one hand, which is, again, inefficient.

Yep, though what do you think is more common; emotes/actions or italics?
Regardless, I like what JustMyBassCannon suggested; using **text** for bolding and //text// for italics.

Anyway there's the nice little "I" icon below the post you can just click, or if riot knew about keyboard shortcuts, ctrl I would be a thing (why is it not a thing?). Shortcuts are the most efficient, even if the format was like [italicizeallofthetextbetweenthesetwoobnoxiouslylongtags][/icantbearsedtoretypethatnonsense] just ctrl I and that'd appear, and sure it'd look bad, but just one button press and it's all there.
Basically, if riot implemented keyboard shortcuts, they could have whatever they want representing formatting. For some reason, they don't, so they're forced to make it one character things, which can inconvenience people trying to use those characters for things other than formatting. I don't know, i just hate it when things are designed so that I have to work around the design to do certain things that are not even an issue on the rest of the internet.

Regardless of how Riot handles the Boards, it is a cut and dry fact that entering two characters is far more efficient than entering seven. I'm aware of mobile support being...erm...underwhelming, but that's really not related to formatting efficiency.

This isn't necessarily an issue with the formatting idea (simplicity), specifically. The characters for italicizing just aren't quite ideal yet. It's obnoxious to me to either have to highlight and click the shortcut or type a long string, and personally I really love being able to make things bold by just typing asterisks.

I'm looking forward to shortcuts as well, although I find I don't even think to use them much anymore, it's so easy to use asterisks. IMO, what I gain from being able to type my own formatting easily (instead of using a button to create tags) is worth more than the inconvenience of having to type \ when I want to use * as a character.
