When you ask for counter-play advice, and someone mentions counter-picks...

This does not mean that the only counter to a champion is playing a specific champion.

Counter-playing another champion often requires specific tools or knowledge of how they work. Frankly, it's hard enough to put into words how you are supposed to deal with certain situations, let alone to learn from just text how you are supposed to do it. There are some parts you can explain, such as timing hard CC during Katarina's ultimate, and then there are things you need to learn how to do for yourself, such as juking a skill shot, timing attacks after a signal, or avoiding specific situations.

Naming a counter-pick champion is one of the easiest ways to get all of this put into a medium that you can apply to muscle memory. Counter-picks have exactly what you need to deal with that opponent, and their kits are often either rewarded significantly for playing into the right situations or extremely adept at avoiding the wrong situations--sometimes both.

It does not mean, however, that you can't use a different champion. Counter-play is less about having all the tools that shut down your opponent, and more about using the tools you have to play around your opponent's strengths. It's entirely possible that, while practicing with a counter-pick, you might play against someone that beats you despite the counter-pick. This is because counter-play is basically about who is more experienced and made better decisions, rather than who bought what item and which champion they locked.

So, instead of complaining that you were "only" told to play another champion, start thinking about why Champ A beats Champ B.

It's especially annoying when people name counters without giving any information on how to play. For example, I could play Gnar as a counter to Darius, but if I'm not told anything extra and not told the matchup, I might just go full tank with Sunfire, or go full AD with BoRK, or do anything other than go Frozen Mallet and bully the Darius around with tons of damage. Or maybe I could be told to build Mallet, but assume that I still have to play back because "Darius is a lane bully, so shouldn't I have to stay back and farm instead of trying to contest a lot?"

My point is that you don't just have to look at the "why", but also the "how" of one champion countering another.

Thats true but if someone says "Hey what's the counter-play to Riven?" and someone responds with "Just pick Garen " instead of saying that that doesn't help try thinking "Hmm why does Garen counter Riven?". Well he can stop her from dealing damage and he is tanky to ignore a lot of her damage. So what did you learn? Stop her from using abilities and she can't do anything, if you can't stop her then try to negate a lot of her damage. If you can't do either of those then you probably can not do much about Riven. Counter-picking is a thing because some champions have natural counter-play to other champions, figure out what that is and why then try to apply it to your gameplay.

Personally, I love watching people try to counterpick me, specifically in ranked. The champions I play in ranked I know inside and out, and I have no problem playing them into my counter and winning. NOTE TO ALL PLAYERS play the champs you're great at, not counters only. If you know a champ well enough you can win even if they have a kit that can beat yours.

You can tell somebody has no idea when their advise to counter play for everything in top lane is Pantheon.

Ah thank you very much for advice. I always thought larger hit boxes were a disadvantage because it gave her more space to hit. The thought of Fiora dancing with Sion, that's a funny thought heh.

As for canceling Q you cannot once you're casting it, it goes off regardless of when you recast it for slows or knock ups. Timing it out for tricking her parry is tricky but manageable. The only problem is figuring it out first probably results in you getting hit with it. E seems my only reliable option but hitting a fast small hit box champ is also tricky but not impossible. If ya can do it to Irelia you can do it to anyone.

The other hard part is the amount of cs you lose just due to luck of her passive. Even then don't forget her E which slows you down to set up for more damage. I do hug the walls but still usually leads to missing cs and my AAs don't hurt as hard as hers, so trading is harder. However E is easier to land at that point so yeah all about Sion's E is my best bet again. Also now that I recall i did use ult offensively, yeah never again, defense only except for ganks.

It just seems the cards are stacked wayyy to high in Fiora's favour in this case. Reason most people say just hard counter her because if she hard counters you, well most cases like this better get the butter ready because you're toast. Alas I'll see what I can do to her next match up, reason I also Sion Jungle. Too many hard counters to Sion top so jungle is safer and smoother.

Thanks for the help. :)

But the question was what is the counterplay to X champion, not what is a counterpick to champion X. The answer to the first question is a list of tools (poke, heal, all in ability, etc...) while the second is an answer that needs far more interpretation. I think actually answering the question asked instead of dodging it to give a vague answer to a different question isn't too much to ask.
