Upvotes are a terrible metric for determining any sort of content value, unfortunately. It's much easier to upvote a random meme post than it is to upvote a well written and thoughtful post, for example, and this applies to almost everything.

An upvote leaderboard would incentivize upvote farming, regardless of whether you view it as a contest or not, and I don't think something like that would provide enough benefit to outweigh the fact there'd be a lot more content that has no purpose other than upvote spam.

You post a one line statement that says as little as possible but gets people who agree with that one line to upvote and talk about the subject.

It's worth pointing out that down votes are tallied separately. Lifetime upvotes can never be less than zero.

Interestingly, because you auto-upvote your own posts and comments you can increase your up vote counter simply by being active.
