I see this come up often enough in discussions.

Do people not know that the tribunal was disbanded in 2014?

It's gone, people. It's been gone for over 3 years now.

From what I've gathered over my time lurking the boards, I've found that there are two types of people who refer to the Tribunal (outside of consciously referencing it, knowing what it is)

Those who assume that the Tribunal is still in action
Those who use the term "Tribunal" to refer to the IFS

I find the latter type in particular very strange, because even if they know about the major differences between the IFS and the Tribunal, they still have a few misconceptions about one or both.

Hopefully, with time, we should be able to phase out the assumption that the Tribunal is active, but for the time being, we just have to do our best to correct folks about the Tribunal/IFS.

The Tribunal was the old Player Behavior/Punishment system before the IFS. Essentially, it was its own section of the League website where players could be given random reports filed against other players, review the chat logs (which, the Tribunal showed the chat logs of the entire match, rather than of the specific player in question), and vote on whether or not the reported player should be punished.

Reported players were colored in green, their allies blue, and their opponents red. The Tribunal also was originally incentivized by rewarding players with Influence Points for contributing.

However, the Tribunal had to be shut down because, with League's increase in popularity, the amount of players being reported, and the overall inefficiencies with human review, the Tribunal proved to be too slow and ineffective in dealing out appropriate punishment. That said, though, Riot took a lot of data from the Tribunal which they worked into the new Punishment system, the Instant Feedback System (IFS).

One noteworthy bit of information that followed from the Tribunal into the IFS was that counterflamers were almost universally voted to punish, which is why the IFS reviews the reported player's chat in isolation - nobody cares who started it, they just care who participated in it.

But, yeah, little trivia aside, that's basically what the Tribunal was.

Aye. Apparently, the Tribunal closed in 2014, and I started playing roughly around 2013, a little before Lucian's release. The Tribunal was fun, but sadly it had to go. Pretty cool either way though, that Riot dabbled in a community-run punishment system.

Because riot released the ifs which is "superior" to the tribunal. Also people would complain that most people didnt read the case and would just vote to punish to save time.
I personally prefer the tribunal because a. It took things in context. The ifs looks for key words rather than toxic sentences because its only an algorithim . b it would be easier to report inters if they admitted they were inting. Its stupid that someone can say there just running down mid go 0-20 and they still need 100s of games like that. c it gave an actual sense of purpose to the community and the behavorial system rather than it just being a computer.

There wasn't a question about why the Tribunal was gone, the OP asked "Do people not know that the tribunal was disbanded in 2014?" - so, your response here kinda flies well over the point of the post.

No, it didn't. It provided context, but the context was decidedly irrelevant to the playerbase as a whole, which is why the IFS only deals in the reported player's chat.

Also wrong - mostly. The IFS only uses keywords in regards to Riot's Zero Tolerance Policies - hate speech, encouragements of self-harm, and death threats fall into this category.

However, it does use an algorithm to look for toxic chat - it learns and adapts to player speech patterns to discern toxicity. I can't remember exactly who said it, so don't quote me, but I recall it being one of the Arbiters/Advisors - namely, I believe it was Prandine who said it. Though, if I'm wrong and misattributing quotes, they are free to hop in and correct me.

Just because it uses an algorithm to review player's chat doesn't mean it can't detect toxicity - especially when the algorithm is literally meant to be guidelines for what toxicity is.

I doubt it. I've seen people (albeit they're extremely rare) who jokingly say they're inting when they're just getting their asses handed to them. Should they be punished? Just because someone says they're inting doesn't mean they actually are, and there are a variety of other indicators to work from in discerning who is and who isn't intentionally feeding.

How does the IFS lack purpose? It's literally designed to review reports and punish toxicity. As for the community - surely, they can find their sense of purpose without an ineffective, inefficient, outdated review system.

IFS is bad because it doesn't care about context. The tribunal didn't make context mandatory to consider when handing out judgment, but it was at least considered.

Using an automated system to go over human to human interaction is just really bad. The only pro over the Tribunal is that it's faster

I was ranked #250 or so on Tribunal NA. Saw some seriously toxic shit in my time reading those cases.

I don't even know what the tribunal is. I've been banned like a reflex (guaranteed there was no review) for encountering high school jocks and telling them where to shove it. And for this reason I will never pay riot money for anything ever.
