Guy adds me after a game where I played badly, and "Why don't you try slitting your wrist on stream, I'll donate and watch" is part of the conversation.

I send in a ticket.

"Hello Summoner,

I'm very sorry you had to deal with a player that said those awful things to you. I will take a look into this for you but due to our privacy policy, I will not be able to disclose any actions against another players account."

Ahh I see. So when you say "I cannot disclose any actions" what you really mean is you will take no action and throw out my ticket. Heck you might not even be human. You might be a robo-reply.

How is a statement like that not an automatic temporary ban? What if he actually made me kill myself? What if I was thinking "Yeah, you know what? There's a bunch of other online bullies I've been dealing with and I'd like to stream my death to them to ruin their lives. Why don't I go ahead and go through with it and add you to the fun and games?"

I'm not actually going to kill myself, so don't send the police to my house Rito. But I have been depressed in the past. And if someone was already thinking about streaming their death... A statement like that could push them over the edge and get them to actually do it. And I guess Riot doesn't care? Or maybe they hit him with a chat restriction with no context as to where it came from, which doesn't sound very useful (although I doubt my ticket was even read by a human, so probably not).

And this wasn't even spontaneous in-game rage. He added me after the game to say these things to me. It was cold and calculated. And he didn't just spontaneously say "kys." He went even further and gave me an actual method. Again, cold and calculated.

And he continues to play the game, without even a temporary break!

Everything that gets written by pm won't get you banned. It's called private message for a reason. Riot doesn't and should'nt even have access to that. It's your choice if you add random players.

Why not? Every other website does. Zuckerberg can read every message you have ever sent to your friends on facebook, and you can't even delete the data.

It are nothing more than meaningless words from a random stranger you decided to add for no reason at all. It's entirely your choice what you do with your life, and if you let words from a person you don't even know affect you. If you can't just ignore such messages, don't accept random friend requests. The internet is a pretty fucked up place. But it's not Riots job to protect you from something that gets written as a private message.

That's not how mental illness works. Educate yourself. You can't just ignore it. A regular mentally healthy person could. A mentally ill person cannot. A mentally ill person is not actually in full control of their mind.

I'm pretty sure if someone actually killed themselves over a private message, and the person who sent the message had been reported for this behavior in the past and received no punishment, Riot could be sued by the family of the person who died. Or, depending on how it all played out, someone at Riot could also go to jail for criminal negligence.

Like I said, the internet is a fucked up place with fucked up people. if you know you can't ignore messages like that, then don't take risks like that.

Also, Riot can't be blamed for not reading the private messages of their users. It's completely reasonable. Getting the in game chat clear of such thing is something else, but for pms the persons themselfes are responsible. The person who wrote it would become problems if you manage to track them down, but that would be pretty hard to do too.

There are many forms of mental illness.

And even apart from that, don't tell me that it has something with mental illness if you can't just decline a friend request from a random stranger. Being able to be affected by such words and not being able to just ignore them is one thing, but just refusing friend requests from strangers is nothing that has to do something with mental state.

Mentally ill people don't always make logical choices, such as "ignoring friend requests." Their brain isn't working properly so they don't understand logic very well.

Every decision you make is affected by your mental state. "Ignoring friend requests" is a decision.

There is also:

  1. A person with depression could be in denial about their depression. Ignoring the friend requests because they "can't handle it" would be admitting they have a problem. They don't want to admit to themselves that they might have a mental illness. So they don't ignore the friend request.

  2. A person with depression and suicidal thoughts, depending how bad it is, doesn't care if they die. So why would they take precautions to protect themselves? They know that accepting that friend request and listening to those words might push them over the edge and cause them to kill themselves. But they want to die. So why would they try to prevent it?

You're very ignorant of how mental illness works. Why do you think the suicide hotline is even a thing? It's because some depressed people can't protect themselves. Other people (and society as a whole) have to protect them. Someone with a broken brain can't use that broken brain to protect themselves from their broken brain. Someone with a functioning brain has to intervene.

Thing is, when we are talking about the case that the mental illness is in a form like you are describing, then getting Riot to try to prevent such thing won't do anything cause things like that can happen anywhere on the internet if you are not careful, especially if you are actively trying to not to be careful. Even if you get that one person, there still will be persons out there who do things like that. Even in game there are many people like that even if probably thousands of perma-bans get issued every day. And then, such behavior is not limited to League. It can happen everywhere on the internet.

We simply have no way to be able to monitor and control all people that write shit like that over the internet. People are anonymous there, and abusing that fact.

But it's not Riots job to protect people. It's the job of the people who are close to that person. You have to see that something is wrong. If the mental illness is in a form like you have described, then getting the pm section of League clear won't do anything, because that can and will happen regularly anywhere on the internet, and there is no way to get the whole internet clear of such things.

You can remove them from your community when they are screenshotted and reported for it.

Even on forums where private messages are "private" (the admins can't read them), that only applies if the message is not reported. Reporting the private messages adds the moderators to the conversation and lets them read it (no screenshot required). ie: the message is only private if neither party clicks the report button.

actually riot gives themselves so much power over the people using their service that they can be sued for not checking the data.

  2. Do not play bad!
  3. Who the fck cares about what others say on the internet, simply don't kill yourself if you don't want to.
  4. If you are mentally ill that you would kill yourself just becasue someone on the internet told you, then do not go on the internet. You are not able to distinguish between trolls and serious comments. The internet is not a place for you then. Go seek a therapist and when you are normal, then go and explore how asshole ppl can be. (But do NOT do it, if you cant handle it.)
  5. A chat offense should NEVER result in ban from the game. Chat offense should result in chat restriction, idk why you want more? (Sadly Rito does more, idk why....)

Manual reports are not the IFS. It won't punish someone within 15 mins of games end.

It'll take a month before someone gets to manually review it. So relax with yoiur witch hunt.

Private Messages are often held to a different standard because they are an opt-in experience. Ultimately, you don't have to accept their friend request and you can remove them at any time.

I don't know what I'm "opting in" to either, do I? It's not like the innocent friend request tells me "this person is going to tell you to kill yourself"

By that same reasoning, all-chat is an opt-in experience too. And yet some of the most toxic (and most punished) things happen in this chat mode, which is disabled by default.
