I afked during a ranked match; Here is my take on it

Earlier today, I was playing a ranked solo queue match.... during this match, I felt palpitations and tachycardia... I was scared. I told my teammates "My heart hurts, I'm really scared"... and to report me if I leave, which I did.

I called an ambulance , I'm fine now... but when I came back I had gotten reported.

Am I upset? hell no. I screwed over my entire team and I deserved to reported despite having a legitimate reason to leave the game.

Having a reason to leave is not an excuse to NOT get reported, it's that simple. I always report afks and I expect to be reported if I afk.

Riot is doing a good job, gg.

Edit: I think most people are missing the point... it's not that I want to be forgiven for having left the game, or that I don't deserve the reports, it's literally exactly the opposite. I know that I ruined the game for my team and I deserved the reports in full. I'm saying that system works, I'm saying Riot is doing a good job. I very rarely leave matches (Like 0.1% of my matches are leaves) and so, it's not really going to affect me. The system is working.

With something as serious as that, league doesn't even matter. League is a game, heart problems are your life. Sure you did make your team lose. But whats more important? Your team losing or your health. I personally think people should only get reported if they afk just because they are mad or if they knew they had to leave yet they still started a game. But seriously though League shouldn't be on your mind if that happens just leave and be safe.

To be fair, you won't get banned if you only AFK once, or once every blue moon, not even slightly punished. But reporting AFKs makes sure that the person who decided to troll by pretending to have a sick daughter will get punished. And the person who actually has a sick daughter and has afkd maybe once or twice will not get punished anyways regardless of your report.

And if you happen to have a disease that causes you to become unable to play in a regular basis, this might not be the right game for you.

I'm actually pretty sure you have to afk more than like once a month or so to get serious punishments. I read that from some Rioter (I think, don't take my word on it for sure), but it has to be a habitual thing that's frequent, not just a few times a year.

Pretty much. As far as toxicity goes, riot makes sound decisions. Gameplaywise is debatable, but they try.

Reports, as far as I can see, are a way of flagging a game and account to be investigated. If it's clearly not a habit, and your chat log is good, then it'll probably not be a problem. Especially a medical issue that you bring up only when necessary and willingly accept punishment for.

Riot has been pretty fair in moderation, and never rude.

Completely untrue. Just check my match history. In the previous 20 games I've had a brief power outage, and a client crash. Those 2 alone were enough to get me LPQ'd.

Low Prio Queue isn't really that big a deal though, just be as careful as you can in the future.

I think there's a lot of different opinions on this in the comments, so let me summarize my own:

I think you're very sportsmanlike for thinking the way you do, and I agree with your mindset - you should get reported for leaving, even in serious cases, otherwise if I felt like leaving a game, I'd say "I think my cat just broke its legs, gtg get it to the vet. Don't report GG".

So yes, you should get reported, and you understand that. But yes, health matters more than a game. So why should he get reported? Isn't that unfair? No, because if health is more important than a game, then you shouldn't care that you got reported, so long as you are okay.

And just because you get reported, doesn't necessarily mean being punished. Unfair isn't being reported. Unfair is being punished for what is clearly not habit and has reasonable doubt.

Unfair isn't me turning down somebody who hits on me. Unfair is me ridiculing them in front of my friends. What I'm trying to say is that a report is communication with Riot. Communication is never 'unfair', but consequence can be unfair.

sorry, but I'd feel like bottomfeeder trash that deserves a good curbstomping if I punished or supported the punishment of someone solely because that person was having potentialy life-threatening heart problems. I do not at all agree with your stance.

Nah, people don't get punished over isolated instances.

However people DO troll by pretending to be sick and going AFK.

Reporting EVERY AFK doesn't hurt the person who never AFKs and happened to had an actual emergency while still punishing the troll who abuses your good will.

I'm a long time gamer with a deep, long-forged understanding that real life problems come first. Even if someone is abusing the sympathy of other people from time to time, I'd prefer that over actually penalizing someone for having a heart attack or stroke.

The thing is, the person having an actual emergency will not get punished by your report, he won't be penalized at all, he won't have anything going against him because the way the system works you are only punished if you're a repeat offender. That means that people having an emergency, heck, even a blackout or internet disconnect, they won't get punished, at all. However if the guys who are trolling aren't repeteadly reported they CAN get off scot-free. It's a win-win thing, there's no reason not to report.

If it happens often enough to where the reports have an effect, then he likely needs to stop honestly. This is a "once in a blue moon" situation, which the reports will not have an effect. Riot doesn't take action of AFK reports unless they happen often enough since they understand that emergencies happen. If you have a afk once every 3 games though for an emergency, then that's likely not the time to play league compared to a game you can pause or stop without worry of screwing over others.

The point is; Even though I had a legitimate reason to leave the game, I still ruined the game for four people .... so I understand and accept the reports I received.

Yeah if his heart breaks it doesn't matter, just a minor injury. You'll feel a slight pinch but that's probably just the internal bleeding you'll soon drown in. No big deal.

I'm fine man. When I felt my heart flutter I called an ambulance and they helped me get better.... this is the second time this has happened to me in my life, so I knew what to do and to stay calm (Even though I was terrified).

It is good that you recognize the consequences of your actions, but more importantly, you made the right decision.

If you have to go to a hospital, don't let League keep you. One or two AFK games won't matter anyway. Riot's punishment system is actually extremely lenient in every category except for discriminatory comments. I know people who rage, troll, or consistently lag out of the game every game, and for most of them the worst they received is low priority queue or chat restrictions.

And if I did, I would write on notes the reason for your leave (Having heartaches) because the judges must have all the details.

this is the correct mentality to have when online gaming. if you have to leave a game for something important, do it. life happens. this will never affect you. you wont get banned unless it happens often. it takes a lot of effort to get banned in lol. my friends and i have been playing for... 5 years now and have never been restricted or anything. we rage irl not in game.

Actually, your teammates probably didn't report you. The LeaverBuster system will automatically detect it. I'm not sure Leaving/AFK is even a report option since the update.

Anyway, glad to hear your OK.

Leaving is one thing. Once you're in game, you either leave or you don't.

A few weeks ago, I spent almost 20 minutes in the loading screen. It wasn't frozen, because my ping was bouncing around like usual. I get into game: it started ~18 minutes ago. After game: smacked by leaver buster.

I would consider this an acceptable AFK. Dead people cannot play League. Let alone do anything else. Now that you are aware of the condition, you can address it.

One occasion of this isn't going to get you punished. However, if you repeatedly have attacks that force you to leave the game, the system will respond with the appropriate action. I'm not a doctor. I cannot advise you on what actions to take to avoid future issues when playing games. But I can tell you that the leaver buster will perform as it is programmed to do. If the AFKs mount up, for whatever reason you have to go AFK, reasonable or not, the punishments will escalate.

Amongst other things, be prepared for that.

Lots of people complain that it is "unfair" that they get reported or otherwise risk punishment for afking.... but regardless of what the reason is, when someone leaves they ruin the game for their whole team. That is 100% true in this case and every other.

If you get banned by Leaver Buster you deserved it. The system is entirely too lenient. Leaving one match out 15 will probably never get you banned.

Look man, shit happens. I had a guy leave a ranked match during my promos because he had to take his aunt to the ER. I don't mind someone leaving once in a while... at all.

It's the pricks that leave 6 matches in a row and you're watching them (through lolking, op.gg and others) continue to play matches.

I guess I'm just very patient and forgiving.

I can't stand ragequits and won't think twice about reporting, but an afk over such a thing as health issues, or even 'I have to be somewhere' after a hour long game, I'm not likely to care too much. I realize this probably means I'm gullible to any sobstory, and that I'm probably contributing to the afk pool by not reporting, but it's just not a big deal to me.
