Unconventional way to stop flamers (as a bystander)

If you're struggling with teammates who argue, it may help to learn how to diffuse arguments and blame-games.

A friend of mine solves it by taking the blame for everything, even if they obviously didn't do it.

Flamer: (to another player) "Dude what the fuck, why would you do that?" My friend: "hey, my bad dude, I didn't realize." Flamer: "No I'm talking to the other guy" My friend: (ignoring the reference to the other person) "yeah man, I made a huge mistake. I'm sorry, it won't happen again." Flamer: "... "

Works like a charm. It takes all the wind out of their sails. They got angry and were gearing up for a fight in chat, but then the wrong person took the blame and there's no simple way to continue flaming.

Plus it's the funniest shit ever to watch them stumble for a reason to stay angry and come up empty.

Give this a try and let me know if you have as much fun as we do.

EDIT: WARNING - Keep in mind if this does not work then the flamer's attention will be on you and you are likely to receive a lot of flame. If you're not ready to deal with that then you shouldn't attempt this. Best thing to do in that case is mute them.

Try to do this while being with a few premade, each of you trying to take the blame.

Completely true, but if you are the type of person who can ignore the deluge of petty insults that will follow then you have saved your team from a flame war between them and the more reactive player they originally tried to flame.

Well yeah but that case would simply mean you're actually taking the flame on yourself now. It's not pleasant for anyone, not even for your teammates.

Take it from the perspective of anyone else than the two of you: I'd be pretty disturbed if i saw someone get abused, knowing they actually took the blame for the others.

That's fair, I don't think it completely solves the problem in that situation, the flamer is certainly still filling chat with abuse for everyone to read. But it does help in cases where the original target of the flame would have flamed back.

It's not a perfect solution, but inserting oneself in between a flamer and their target can prevent an argument from breaking out and completely disrupting teamwork.

It's a buffer to rectify the damage, sure. Luckily, the mute buttons eliminate these issues entirely...after some damage has been done, unfortunately.

I find that when I get insulted, flirting with them will diffuse them quite often. Be as lewd or perverted towards them as you like, but don't be vulgar. Make them uncomfortable, but don't say anything they can report you for.

Quoting song lyrics is also effective. Bonus points if it's a romance song.

idk this might come off as inting in some situations if you die and they say "wtf jinx" and you reply " COUNTRY ROAAADDDDSSS TAKE ME HOMEEEEE" they might take it as you're inting and then go full sperg on you.

This. I used to play Halo with a buddy of mine named Mr. Bubbles so OBVIOUSLY I had to choose a name that would fit the theme - Kaptain Kuddles. I've used this name in most PvP oriented games ever since.

I wouldn't say be lewd or perverted. Sometimes, sure. But most of the time I can diffuse a situation with "Aww, someone need some Kuddles?" or "Come over here big boy, It's Kuddletime!"

I either get them to throw a quick jab at my sexual preference and that's the end or they explode into hate speech in which case I just continue, ask them to play the game and if they don't, report, knowing I made the world a Sparkly-er, Kuddly-y-er place!

EDIT: I'm 27, happily married and enjoy a good laugh from tasteful humor! (In case that didn't convey from the above) lol

Thanks, this is the type of shit that's actually and healthy for gameplay, rather than "hurr durr teammate fight is go MUUTE NOW!!!!!"

Muting doesn't solve shit, it only makes you ignorant to the problems your team has. If this had happened in the background while you had whole team muted, you wouldn't even know your teammates are tilting, and would not even have the chance to resolve it, and ultimately lose the game.

I may have to start doing this, I will try it tonight. I love that it shows you saw what they said, but don't care what they say, with out having to say anything really.

It's awesome to diffuse situations like that, but from my experience here, flamers in League want to burn down the entire team rather than just one person. I've tried it out and the flamer just went straight to me and started calling me names that they would never say to their mothers.

Negative reinforcement's also good: Sometimes I say things like "stop being a whiny bitch and play, the game isn't over yet". Surprisingly, it works.

I will have to test that and get back to you. Might be a while though since I don't plan to actively piss anyone off.

I hypothesize that it would work, because as long as you can ignore their insults then at least they aren't antagonizing anyone else on the team who might be more apt to react or flame back.

Another way. Tell both participants in the flame war to go fuck themselves. They start working together to flame you now :D

Hahaha this works too XD I would think it a little less effective though because then you're distracting two players instead of just one, but that's just my hypothesis.

This doesn't work. The guy would just start calling you names the whole game and telling you how you're trash. If the guy in that game stopped talking, then he isn't one of the main toxic players out there (aka. Flaming his teammates and calling them trash, not caring what they say and do).

Even if they don't stop, if you are the type of player who can ignore the deluge of insults they spew at you then you will at least have saved your team from the arguing that would have occurred if they kept flaming another teammate who was more reactive and would have flamed back.

Examples would be giving advice or telling them to go to Baron, but instead they'll just keep flaming and go farm minions bot lane.

Oh I see, thanks for clarifying.

If you aren't actively trying to piss them off they won't have any reason to react that way. I'm not suggesting saying anything negative to or about them, just apologizing as if whatever went wrong is your fault - even if you know it isn't.

In my opinion, if a flamer is angry enough to do that, they were already going to do that. You aren't making more problems by drawing their flame to you and away from a teammate. if you don't insult them at all then you're not antagonizing them and it's unlikely to anger them the way you seem to think it would.

Muting them is good though, at least that way they can't harass you further.

My answer always ends up being, "Because it was fun." Anything they say after that is irrelevant, because I have work to do on the rift and don't have time to chat. Odds are, that if you aren't in someones headset, nothing you say to them has any meaning anyway, so why bother at all? Play the game. Play your way. Have your fun.
