It's someone's name. There was a bad person in history for every name and you can see how idiotic it would be to censor every name as a result. If someone is using Hitler to harass others, then punish that but don't censor someone's name. This isn't Harry Potter and doing so is beyond stupid.

It's not a stupid censor. That is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people.

It's not even a topic. It's a name. Also, a censor is supposed to be for highly offensive things like intense profanity, not just for subjects which may be uncomfortable to you. What's next, censor abortion? Censor death penalty? Censor mortality? Censor starvation? Censor inequality? Censor racism?

It makes sense to censor things such as "dumbfuck" because that can never be anything but an insult. However, Hitler is simply a name as well as a historical figure and not everything discussed about him is automatically meant as harassment or an insult. If you even read the OP's chat, no one was being harassed when discussing Hitler. A playful conversation was shut down and made unenjoyable by oversensitive censors.

Are you a jew? If I could take a guess the answer would be no. You have no idea what it is like to think about 7 million people of your own being murdered. So when you say that bringing up his name doesn't bring up a sensitive subject then you should most likely go lie down and think about your life.

It really doesn't help to censor names. It just makes us all sound like "Harry Potter" characters talking about Voldemort. Yes, I agree that it's a sensitive subject for many people, including Jews, but I can't imagine that censoring it helps that pain at all. He existed, and we all know it. I can't really make an argument for censoring it in an online video game, personally.

Consequently, you would know that if you were able to have a mature conversation about Hitler. Which is EXACTLY the benefit of being able to use his name. #advantages

I am with you. Genocide is terrible. No one likes Hitler. And the guy using it in this context wasn't using it to have a mature discussion. We are in agreement about that. BUT, if it's censored, it can't be used at all. That would be a shame. Because we need to talk about those things so they don't ever happen again.

But why do we need to talk about stuff like hitler in a video game? I don't think there is any situation where you can say, "This conversation would be a lot better if the word 'hitler' wasn't censored"

Again, I agree that we probably don't. In a video game. I think your key argument, that this conversation was not improved by having Hitler in it, is correct.

But that's a different argument than the censorship argument. One of the things that Hitler did to control people was to employ censorship. It's one of the many things that we've become very afraid of, and rightfully so, in the western world, because dictators have used it to oppress people in the recent past.

Again, MY argument isn't that it is wrong to censor his name in this context, just that it isn't helpful. And if we were talking about a school context, I would say it is wrong. Those things need to be discussed.

If I were arguing with the OP, I would probably say that censoring Hitler's name in this game isn't such a crazy thing to do. But I don't think it's stupid, as you said in your response. It's understandable to think that Hitler could (or should) be openly talked about in any context, precisely BECAUSE he was a central figure in such great tragedies. We shouldn't ever forget that, and censorship would be a great way to try.
