So We All Know KYS Is NOT Tolerated But...

What about someone threatening to kill themselves? Because I just ran into that today.

Look, folks, whatever real life issues you have has absolutely nothing to do with me or your allies unless you just happen to be IRL friends with one or more of your allies. And if you happen to actually be on the verge of committing self harm or even suicide over something that happened in a video game then you NEED to seek outside help.

The community of league is NOT your support or therapy group and every one of us has our own shit to deal with without some random stranger tossing their baggage onto our monitors.

Outside help is the rational choice here… problem being that most suicidal people aren't exactly known for their rational choices.

Don't get me wrong, their happiness is not your responsibility and to drop this kind of bomb at random strangers online is selfish, bordering on emotional abuse (depending on context). But I think it's important to keep in mind that they likely have no conscious intent to make you feel bad or guilty.

If you want to be super extra nice, tell them they should probably talk to somebody about these things if they're serious, and leave it at that. Mute them if you have to.

But most importantly, just like when encountering feeders and ragers: Move on. The longer you let your thoughts linger such incidents the more it will wear you down... cases like these presumably much more than any feeder or rager ever could.

it should be allowed...or at least not "punishable" but still reportable in the sense that you let the system know "hey, this person needs help" and maybe that could trigger an email with resources for them, like the number for the suicide prevention hotline. you know an email that says we take talk about suicide seriously and here is a number to call if you need to talk to someone...

i agree that if someone wants to kill themselves over a video game or if a video game puts them over the edge then they def need outside help.

I would say that encouraging someone to kill themselves is waaaaaay worse than someone threathening to kill themselves.

That person isn't offending anyone, they're asking for help. Obviously, you're in no way obligated to help them, and you're not a bad person for not doing so. But someone else might be willing and able to help, so I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed.

It's not like it's hurting you that much, and you can just mute them if you don't feel like dealing with them, and that totally fine.

you're talking about

"KMS" right?

yeah that's still negative behavior and report worthy.

zero tolerance? not completely.

this is either someone extremely depressed or someone seeking attention.

either way it's a difficult issue. so riot tends to make them unable to talk for a while. riot's not a therapist. they're a video game company. and negative behavior like that whether it's childish or misguided still turns new and old consumers away. it goes up the escalation program like any other ban.

It's unlikely to be treated the same way, but no, I don't think that belongs in League either.

I have a friend who constantly rants about how badly the game makes him want to kill himself whenever he starts losing. He starts going into a long rant in all chat about how he wished he could leave the game because of how suicidal it was making him, but can't, because leaver buster would make him even more suicidal. This makes me believe that some of these people threatening to kill themselves are actually just angry at the game, but are addicted to it and can't quit, just like drugs. As such, they only vent their frustration in game, where their emotions are affected the most.

what did he say?

Arammus7/4/2018, 11:02:12 AM2 votes

kys is not a 0 tolerance phrase on euw anymore. idk why but it isnt. it literally happened to me, i posted it on the boards, kinda linked the guys profile and noone so far had an explanation as to why he isnt banned. i even showed the screen i took.

"kys you fucking niggger" as he wrote is not a 0 tolerance thing anymore on euw.

sad but oh well.

smh kms.

no srsly, if that shit's gotta be bannable, just remove chat already.

Dr Birdie7/5/2018, 1:35:31 AM1 votes

Are you asking for it to be banneable when someone calls out for help in this way? If so, keep your opinions to yourself because you obviously have no idea what mental illness is like.

Asudurga7/5/2018, 2:32:10 AM1 votes

Quite simply it should not be a bannable offence for someone to say they want to kill or harm themselves but it should be treated with the same severity as someone saying "kys" but also treated with more care. If someone you feel genuinely has that feeling file a report and explain in the desc box in clear detail and if you have sufficient video or pictures send a support ticket explaining things there and hope things can only go uphill for the person feeling this way.

Shit happens in people's lives that we may or not know about that could drive them to such lengths. So every little bit helps.

Nah dude I'll just bury the bad thoughts deep inside me where no one can see them. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

It was most likely a 12 year old kid. Someone who has depression or serious real life issues would't brag about it in an online game.

La Belle Sauvage7/5/2018, 2:20:27 PM1 votes

If I read such a comment I typically tell them to seek help and paste a prevention website. If the persist, I refer back to the website and mute them.

The whole "with without some random stranger tossing their baggage onto our monitors." If you truly feel that way than why don't you mute all, since you're unable to control what some one may post?
