In my mind: Staffs, Sticks, Wands = Mages. Cloaks, shields, veils= Tanks.

I like the change stat-wise, but I agree the naming seems weird now. A lot of mages didn't spend much time in abyssal range.

Mages get an hourglass, a rocket belt, and masks for items.

They can even get some swords. item 3100 item 3115
