But why does she get to have an AD scaling shield? Just wondering since it seems most shields are AP.

Because she has no reason to build AP. Giving her a shield would make her initiation absolute trash. Also her ultimate wouldn't affect her shield, meaning it's whole thematic importance of the ultimate

I mean, most AD champs with some kind of shield have it scale with AP is my point.

Well yes, but those champions don't surround around that theme that Riven's ult incorporates. You see, take Jinx' E. That has an AP ratio for a few reasons. 1; it's really only meant for peeling or chasing, the tiny damage it deals is just a little bonus. She doesn't NEED to do damage with it. Now back to Riven's shield. Obviously her ultimate makes her sword whole again, giving her bonus AD. She's empowered by her haunting past so all of her abilities become stronger. Now we wouldn't be able to see that if the shield were an AP ratio, as it would have no affect on it. Her initiation is strengthened, as well as everything else. So with everything buffed, it allows her to go all-in. However take away the E's strength and all of a sudden, poor Riven has no solid initiation, so her brawl becomes a reckless clusterfuck of buttonmashing as she has to constantly take way more damage

Basically to force her to buy AD items to have any survivability and since AD items have 0 tanky stats, she relies on getting enough AD to survive long enough to kill someone. If it scaled off tanky stats like most other shields, she could fall back on tank items and it wouldn't hamstring her.

Basically forces her into a Snowball and carry or be pretty much irrelevant champion.
