Oh How Fickle the League Community is...

So, recently I came across this video on YouTube, where I stepped away from it thinking... "Man, doesn't this perfectly exemplify a problem I have with this community?"

Now, I want to preface this with a warning that I don't want you to think that I have something against RedMercy. I don't care about his opinion, he is entitled to his opinion, but what I want to highlight is a problem that I noticed on a larger scale in the community. Also, spoiler warning: I'm going to be spoiling the number 1 spot on the list, so if you would like to know what the list contains, watch the video first.

That being said, let's begin the discussion.

Why does everyone just follow what pros do? I mean, we've seen so many examples of this... Janna comes to mind, but most recently, it's Veigar. I honestly don't get how many people can blindly pass him up as a trash pick after his rework, but praise him for being an amazing champion after he appears in the LCS. I used to think that this was more of a lower-elo problem, but apparently not. He didn't really change that much between the two events anyways, other than some well-deserved tweaks. He's at the top of this list, and I'm sure he's not far from the top of many others. Why? Has he always been hidden OP? Or are people excited over nothing?

I'd argue a little of both. Let's explore his abilities, shall we?

Passive: Ok, admittedly, everyone still thinks it's a throwaway passive, although, now, people are more forgiving of it because Veigar is "OP" now, and it synergizes with Athene's/Chalice of Harmony, which has ALWAYS been true.

Q: His q really came under fire when they changed it to a skill shot, lamenting how all reworks are eliminating single-target abilities, insert obligatory Ryze rework complaints here... overall, everyone hated this change, even after the range was buffed. They didn't give a shit about this skill between Veigar's rework and his rise to fame in the LCS. Oh, after that, everyone goes "OOOOOH I CAN USE THIS TO FARM FASTER!" Yeah, something I saw when the rework was released.

W: People still hate on this skill, but a lot less often since his use in the LCS, and sometimes people point out how it can be used to punish out of position players, or zoning champions out. I still think this skill is good, but you have to be really skilled to use it effectively.

E: This skill got the most shit of them all after the rework. People said that the changes to this skill destroyed Veigar, and he'd never be a thing without his instant-cast stun. Now, people are praising it as one of the best cc abilities in the game!? The fuck, man? This one is more specific to the video, but I have no doubts that someone else has said it since the LCS this year. Like I said, this is not to attack RedMercy, but I can't help that this particular statement gets under my skin. With the delay on it, I know it's not as good as it had been, but people flipped from saying it's garbage, to saying it's the best thing since sliced bread, literally overnight! Yeah, OK.

R: People have been complaining about this since Veigar was released. No surprise there, because it inherently punishes mages for building glass cannon, which is the norm, and scales pretty hard either way. It's one of Veigar's selling points, and hasn't changed much at all. People just use it as more evidence to say "This champion is OP."

I personally hate when the community does this. I mean, there are bad champions, that no one plays for a reason. Urgot was obscure for the longest time for a reason; he was nerfed into the ground and afterward so many other champions do his job, but better. He has a unique gimmick, but it's not worth it. The old Sion was horrible; his scalings were all over the place, no really good build existed for him, and, again he had one unique thing about him, but that was it. Other than mixing your opponent up by surprising them with a build they weren't expecting, he didn't have much to him that would make him more viable than someone else. That's why he got a rework.

But Veigar? He's never really lost power. Admittedly, when his rework was hot out the PBE, his range needed a small buff, but other than that, he was golden. Now, he gets banned all the time when I try to use him, or people just jump on him because he's Flavor of the Month, despite the fact that he's still going to be a good mid laner for a while, and will fade into obscurity again for no reason. What's worse is that I got flamed for picking Veigar before the LCS, and sometimes it became a self-fulfilling prophecy that I would lose lane. Jungler thinks Veigar is trash, I get camped, he never counter ganks, mid lane lost, asshole jungler thinks he was proven right.

Ok, so it got a little more ranty than I figured, but what do you guys think? Does this get on your nerves too? Have you had a main champion that you liked to play that became pretty much ruined by their own surge of popularity? Or do you all think I'm just some raving lunatic who's over-exaggerating?
