It seems weird that it can be

Gold1, Gold3, Gold4, Gold4, Gold4

Gold4, Gold4, Silver1, Silver2, Silver2.

Basically it's s1,s2,s2 vs g1,g3,g4. wut

Matchmaking is based on MMR, not Rank. Ranks are only milestones to get rewards and don't always accurately reflect the player's current MMR. If you are in a match with them, you are performing roughly the same as them, so ignore the Rank. You can move up and down quickly due to sheer luck, but your MMR does not move so rapidly.
