It is going to be consistent. From now on the seasons will be numbered based off of the year. Now that Riot is treating League like a sport, they're using year-based nomenclature in stead of 'season 3' because they're preparing for this to be going long-term.
From now on, in Riot's eyes, it will be 2014 Season, 2015 Season, 2016 Season, 2017 Season, etc. etc.
Know whats worse for people with OCD? I'd adivse you not read if you have OCD as you will never unsee it....
Season names by number is worlds more meaningful than a year. League will not last 50 years like football. You don't need to handle season information in a way that 50 years of league would require. Season numbers add more relevancy to what we would talk about in terms of "hey, he was season 2 world champion. Hey season 4 was amazing wasn't it?"
You don't quite know what someone is talking about immediately when they say "Hey, he was 2011 world champion." Will you also think off the top of your head "Hey, he was a part of CLG in 2017" instead of "Hey, he was a part of CLG in Season 6"
It's a matter of meaningfulness vs. convenience, and theres plenty of convenience in the season numbers because we won't have 50 seasons of league.
I don't know why they changed it to years, even on the summoner icons.

They are changing the naming they are using to explain seasons. Next years ward will not say season 5, it will say 2015.
They arent going to go and change the name of the old stuff now though. Because when it came out, it WAS referred to as season 3, not 2013.
Seriously... Why Riot. Consistency please.
