You know whats worse than playing through 3 seasons to finally assemble a key?
Using that one key on the 54270391 chests you have to unlock a shard to a skin/champ you already own.

my key to chest ratio has been pretty consistent tbh, but I will permanently have 3-4 unopened chests just due to how my playing frequency panned out before.
idk why everyone thinks it's such a problem. It's free stuff, who cares if Riot creates incentive to purchase a few keys by leaving a few unopened chests your inventory, they are a business when it comes down to it
