Mother's Day MSI Explaining Fun
Happy Mother's Day, Summoners!
I'm watching MSI in the background while the family gets ready to go out for brunch, and my mother started watching over my shoulder and is asking questions. The conversation went something like this:
Mom: "Whatcha watching?" Me: "The League of Legends Mid Season Invitational." Mom: "...is that an anime or...? Me: "Haha, no, it's a video game e-sport competition." Mom: "E-sport? Like, video game football?" Me: "In a sense. But with swords and magic." Mom: "Oh, I see." Game: SKT Huni has slain G2 Trick Mom: "So the blue teams number went up... does that mean they're winning?" Me: "Kinda. Both teams have a base, and the team that captures their opponents base first wins, so the team highest score isn't necessarily the team that wins." Mom: "...So it's like... capture the flag?" Me: "That's a bit simplistic, but yeah." Mom: notices mini map Mom: points at bot lane Mom: "...so why don't they just go around and capture it that way?" Me: "Well, you see, there are these towers that are intermediate objectives that have to be taken first." Mom: "Gotcha..." Mom: pause Mom: "So, you said this is a competition? What's the prize?" Me: "Well, the prize pool for this event is around $250,000" Mom: "What?!" Me: "I know, crazy right? The top winners also get better placement in the finals tournament at the end of the season." Mom: "...like...a super bowl thing?" Me: "Yeah... you know, the more I explain this out loud, the more it sounds kinda silly."
So that was a good laugh. But it also it got me thinking: How have other people explained LoL and e-sports in general to their parents/grandparents/spouses/significant others/etc? Or if you haven't had that experience before, how would you in a hypothetical situation?
