Irelia has never been lategame champ. She is midgame snowball champ - she needs to hit her powerspike and go ham on people. Later on the game she somwhat falls off. She needs to build tanky, cause she is all-in fighter without escape, so her dmg is meh late game. Her true dmg hits it peak at lvl 9. Later in the game people have more health, so it is hurts less. Do not get me wrong - her late game is not weak, but she gets outscaled by a lot of champs. So if you let her to come back to the point she stomps you - you are doing something wrong/throwing your lead.
