Out of all the MOBA's, this one requires the most time and money investment.

I played LoL for about 3 years and even till now after spending a good $150 from all discounted champions I still don't have all the champions nor runes. Aside from the fact that levelling up to 30 takes AGES, if you're not at level 30 you will not win games because of the lack of access to greater runes and masteries - and because LoL is super snowbally, these things are a MUST to win early game trades. And you have to spend money on runes and rune pages, and on meta champions, to the point where you will be forced to spend up to $30-40 and ~1 month of levelling just to play your first unranked match and feel confident enough to win it. And by that time, your pool of champions and runes are still very limited. You can compile the 6300 needed for new champions or runes, but that can literally take forever to do - if you do only daily wins, that's one champion per MONTH. There are discounted heroes, but only 3 per week and there are 126 in total, and over time the prices really do rack up.

I stopped playing LoL for a few months and moved on to other games, like SMITE and HotS. I only played DotA for one day and decided not to play it anymore because the mechanics are way too unforgiving. However, in the case of DotA, the fact that EVERY hero in the game is free is something that is to be commanded for that game - you can create your profile and play your first ranked game right off the bat.

SMITE is pretty much the same thing - I thought SMITE would in the same boat as LoL, but I was so wrong. All you need to do is to pay $35 on the complete God pack, and you're all set - you don't need to level up or do anything else; you can just go and play your first ranked match comfortably.

HotS is also very pricey, but thankfully you only have to pay for heroes. Resources are also easier to get in HotS, because you can get daily bounties up to 800 gold (one hero costs 10,000), and levelling each up to 5 awards you 500 gold. There are also plenty of hero packs that have price discounts up to 75%. I played HotS for 4 months, paid every discounted heroes and right now I own 90% of all the heroes.

So why? Why is it that Riot makes LoL the MOBA games that requires the most money and time investment?

first of all. if its taken you 3 years to get all the champs your doing something wrong, second of all to get good runes you need level 20 not 30, 3rd of all you cannot buy runes with money only ip, 4th of all you do not NEED meta champs any champ can be good if you are good enough with them.

I guess you would say that the recent MOBA have taken notice towards how Riot is handling their game. And i would say that its best that they do that. You can only get in this world if you keep upgrading because no one is going to play the same game twice. Especially in a genre like this where they are all basically the same game you need to offer something your competitors doesnt have/do. With Riot being in the front for so long this gave devs a chance to see what consumers want in their game.

In the case with Smite they knew getting characters in your game would be irritating, So what do they do? Hand out a God Pack. Not only that but for 30$ you can own not only the characters out now, but all future characters as well. No other MOBA (or game for that matter) does that especially that cheap. Now LoL obviously cannot do that. One because they would lose a ton of money with how much characters they have now, But they could never make it as cheap as that! They did the whole daily reward system of handing out currency every day you long in.

With HotS it seems leveling up, and their currency you gain is at a much higher rate than LoL. Plus they keep it short and sweet and really just beginner friendly. Its the type of game that truly is for enjoying and relaxing.

You don't need runes and masteries to win games. No seriously, they're nice but don't have a crazy amount of effect. League isn't really snowbally, in fact at my current elo (silver) I feel the potential for throws are so high it's more often the team ahead at 15 minutes that loses. Also I have never bought a champ with RP, in fact I've spent very little money on this game and have never felt punished for that. That's because it's not really important to have every single champ in the game. If you can find a champ or two that you really like then having them is enough till you have enough IP for more. At the moment I own maybe a half of the champions, but I'm not really interested in any of the other ones. So I finally threw some IP into making up several sets of runes as opposed to my original generic page. I think if you're spending that much on the game something else is wrong.

Yes League can easily take a lot of your time, especially if you're someone that wants to have everything in it. It also takes a long time to master. I'd say that even people who have played enough games for lvl 30 still don't understand many critical components of the game. That's pretty much what bronze is, people who are still learning the basics of how to keep track of all the factors. I'm still learning 3 years later and that's one of the things I love about league. It has a lot of depth and is fun in different ways when you're at different skill levels.

All that aside, if you like HOTS or SMITE better than LoL, that's cool, it's not for everyone and people's preferences vary. But there's no reason to complain about it here, because we think differently.
