Why Draven is my Favorite Champion in LoL, and why he can be your fave too
Draven, The Glorious Executioner
( A Narcissistic Man with Axes)
The ADC role, has to be the most exciting role in the entire game, no other role comes close to it. This is my argument.
The first reason, is that you do the most damage out of everyone over a long period of time. My second reason, is that because you are so goddamn squishy, the slightest little thing that touches you, will instantly delete you, so you are always on the edge of your seat, in a state of deep focus, trying to juke the enemy team’s bs.
---These two reasons congeal into a high risk, high reward playstyle, and if you play your cards right, and your team remembers that you are “kind of” important, the game becomes 2 times more enjoyable.
---This is where my love for Draven comes in. Draven is a narcissistic asshole, who executes people in various different and “spectacular” ways, in order to put on the best show, earn himself applause, only to further boost his already inflated ego.
---Even just the little things with him, like whenever you get a kill and you are showered with coins and a roaring crowd, or whenever you have caught your 150th Axe, he causes an interaction within the chatbox (which is an entirely unique to him), congratulating you! Playing well with Draven makes you feel good about yourself, and he really does take the role to another level.
Now the first thing to remember when you start playing Draven, is that he is noticeably more difficult to master than other champions of this role. One aspect of a champions difficulty rating is how fast a champion can be blown up, and if you have to play around this weakness or not (you cannot just walk in with no plan whatsoever like a tank would, and get out safe and sound) you have to STRATEGIZE. I know, it sounds like too much work- but it’s all worth ---it for that sweet sound of praise you receive when you do well.
First off, his passive, League of Draven, grants him bonus gold whenever he kills an enemy champion- depending on how many stacks of Adoration he has. Again, this rewards you for playing well. Sadly, he loses half of these when he is slain.
---Now we have his Q, Spinning Axe, which is what his whole kit plays around. He throws an empowered basic attack, which deals up to 85% of his bonus attack damage. Every time he throws one of these empowered basic attacks out, it ricochets off the target hit, and lands in an area toggled in proportion to where he threw it, and what direction he was moving. Draven can then catch this axe after about 2 seconds or so (that is when it will hit the ground) and automatically grant him another empowered basic attack. This ability creates a mini-game inside of the game itself, encouraging you to catch the axes as much as possible, in order to output the most damage possible. Early game this gives a much stronger harrass than most ADC’s can boast, and in the late game- no ADC- or marksman for that matter can 1v1 him- except for MAYBE, Vayne, but she is busted as it is (purposeful salt).
Late game, is where these Spinning Axes become absurdly powerful, having the ability to chunk almost half any squishy target’s health if this happens to critically strike. If that wasn’t enough already, Draven can spin up to 2 Spinning Axes at once, outputting unreal amounts of damage throughout the course of a fight. You know you are a Draven GOD, when you can master the 3 Axe technique, which is where Draven is throwing auto’s so fast that he, quite literally, is throwing more axes than humanly possible. If Draven has 3 Axes in the late game, and he sets his eyes on YOU, I’m sorry, I don’t care who you might be, but as long as you can stay out of his range- you are dead.
---His W, Blood Rush, serves as a coping mechanism for Draven. It is his only form of “mobility?”, if you want to call it that, and increases his Attack Speed up to 40%, and granting him an extremely short burst of speed that decays rapidly over the duration, of only about 60% increase over 1.5 seconds. While this ability might seem like shit at first, just remember that catching a Spinning Axe, will instantly refresh this abilities cooldown. This is essential to Draven, if you don’t catch axes, you can’t run or fight.
---Now we are at his E, Stand Aside. Draven throws his axes in a line in front of him, dealing 50% of his bonus AD, and knocking all enemies hit to the side, and applying a, let’s be honest, really shitty slow- only about 40% at max rank for 2 seconds (which is the only time it may be good).
The animation is great for this one, if you have not paid attention to it, I advise you look more closely at Draven while he uses his E, throwing his hands up in the air, looking up to the sky, as if asking for more adoration. This ability can save lives when timed correctly, with the power to prevent a Lee Sin from connecting with you, to a Zac slingshotting himself over a wall.
---Finally, his Ultimate Ability, Whirling Death. Just the name gives you chills. Draven slams two massive axes into the ground and spins them forward, and they do not have a range limit, meaning this ability is global, and will return to him after colliding with the very edge of the map, or hitting an enemy champion. This deals good damage, 110% bonus AD, but the downside to such a great Ultimate is that it deals less damage according to how many units it struck along the way, and back, with a minimum damage percentage of 40% total damage.
Must I explain how awesome global abilities are? They make you feel like you have unlimited range, and unlimited potential. Not to mention killing someone with this from across the entire fucking map can make anyone’s day. Throwing this out at the beginning of a teamfight can install some good initial damage, while the fight ensues, hopefully giving your team the edge.
---Draven is my favorite champion in the entire game, as you could have guessed. But my reasoning is not that I main the ADC role, which I don’t. It’s because I feel unstoppable when I play him, I am forced to become immersed in the intense feel of a game, I am forced to play excellently, and when you can do that- you never want to stop playing Draven. His ego gives you an ego of your own. Same with the little things, like the Applause when getting a kill, the Chatbox congratulating you, as if you have won the mini-game, and from his style of battle to his death animation, Draven makes you want feel as glorious as he believes himself to be.
That, is why I love Draven.
Recommended Draven Build:
(these are core)
(my favorite build path)
(before you crucify me, Deadman's does not give any damage, unless stacked, but if you are struggling against a snowballing AD assassin, this not only give you health to back yourself up, but grants you increasing movement speed, which synergizes well with Draven's W. If you happen to catch someone out, the hard slow Draven can apply with a ranged auto, can give your team time to make quick work of them).
(this item makes Draven's burst in the late game disgusting, additional movement speed, increased attack range, along with more crit chance).
(this item grants Draven damage, movement speed OUT of combat, and CDR. The active gives Draven insane outplay potential).
Should you play Draven? To that, I have to ask you; Do you want to feel glorious? If so, what the hell are you waiting for!? Just don’t become Tyler1, and everything will be OK.
P.S. Thanks for reading through this entire essay, and if you enjoyed then I am glad, and I salute you, and have a damn good time.
