Can You Gift Someone Who Isn't A Friend?

About a week ago, my computer died while loading into a game. Apparently my team weren't able to remake, however, and actually went on to win a 4v5 without me.

I don't know any of them, but I wanted to send some gifts by way of apology. Do I actually need to request them as friends to be able to send them anything?
