why can't people just say their role a 2nd time

I connected after this Varus, so I didn't see where he was going.

He was taking ignite to that lead me to believe he was going mid. I asked, "am I mid or adc"

no one said a word.

So I went Urgot adc just in case I was going to be shoved elsewhere. (I can take him mid or top)

Varus complains once the game starts that I stole his role then goes mid. What the actual hell.
