I can't even describe how hyped I am for Rek'Sai! Not only is it an amazing design with an awesome concept, it's also a void champ (!!!!), a jungler (which we haven't had a new one of since Zac) and a female, when it easily could have been defaulted into male (like literally every other none-human character in this game except Anivia). Really, all I can say is "Awesome job!"

I imagine they had planned for it to be male, saw the angry post about sexism on the boards, and then changed it to female because it's a monster and makes no difference.

Pretty much. It has no discernable gender other than a label, so who cares.

Honestly, Cho'Gath and the rest I feel use the pronouns he and him just because they have to use one.

They're not really male.

I don't even know if they have a real gender. I don't counter monsterous champions as male champions.

Their voiceovers sound kind of male though. Masculine? Testosterone-affected? I dunno.

Female bears sound like male bears.

Testosterone-affected? No. Non-human.

Okay someone help me out here, I'm a newb to league, what's the void, and why does it matter that she's a void champion?

"To some it is known as the Outside, to others it is the Unknown. To most, however, it is called the Void. It is a timeless place inhabited by various seemingly intelligent entities who, for reasons beyond human understanding, have the desire to gain entrance to and vitiate the worlds outside their realm. These creatures are called "Voidborn". According to Vel'Koz, the Void is a very dark place, both he and Cho'Gath said that the daylight in Runeterra is too strong for them."

The reason people are happy shes female is because every void champion in the game so far have been male.

The Void is where Cho'Gath, Kog'Maw, Kha'Zix, Vel'Koz, and now Rek'Sai are from, and where Malzahar and Kassadin got their powers from. It's basically an interdimensional space filled with some nasty shit that's been sending scout agents into Runeterra (the game's world) for potentially a VERY VERY long time. Like, before Azir's reign and before Lissandra times. Similarities can be drawn to the Cthulu mythos by Lovecraft and the Kaiju seen in Pacific Rim.

Rek'Sai being female is cool because the Void hasn't had any "female" champions yet. She's also unique in that she doesn't have an understandable voiceover and is one of the only monstrous females who doesn't have a humanoid form (the other is Anivia).

What's been mentioned already. I also happen to be a huuuuuuuuge void-fanboy. ;)

Honestly, the only people who about care about her her gender are petty people who have an axe to grind against champs like Ahri. They cry sexism whilst ignoring the fact that Ezreal is a sexualized little boy.
