400+ games with Aatrox, reached from Bronze IV to Plat II (S5).
Now, on my 2nd account, from SIV to GIV in one month (and still climbing / 25-27LP/win), with 70% winrate on Aatrox.
Here's my TIPS for Aatrox :
First of all, he has LOTS, LOTS of counters.
Never ever pick Aatrox Top lane into :
Extremely hard early / Hard late
Pantheon / Irelia / Poppy / Fiora / Quinn / Teemo
I mean absolutely never. They have to do 10 mistakes in 1 min to lose the lane. But even when they lose the lane, no matter how fed you are, there will be a point that, when you will do just half mistake and they will kill you.
Hard lanes :
Hard early / Extremely hard late
Malphite/Trundle/Zac/Ryze/Graves/Rammus
Hard to get kills early in these lanes. You need to push lanes/ get advantage level/ try to get an early kill ASAP, or else, the fight will be downhill from there.
Hard lanes v2 easy early / awful late:
Easy Early / Extremely hard late
Jax/Tryndamere/Nasus/Wukong/Darius/Gangplank
Different than the group above, is that early you can easy get a kill with these. But, if you are not sure you can get 1-2 kills before 6, do not try.Again, a downhill fight from there.
**
If any player who plays the champions above, are at the same skill level as you : They will win, unless your jungler babysits you.You always have to give 100% with Aatrox, and always be better than your opponent. This is why i like Aatrox.**
Medium lanes / skill matchup:
These kind of match-ups are my favourites. Due to the fact that it is a skill matchup.
Riven/Gnar/Garen/Renekton/Cho'Gath/Volibear
Easy lanes :
Shen/Vladimir/Singed/Maokai/Dr. Mundo. Usually low burst tank, or sustain dmg champions. I recommend after Executioner vs. Vlad/Mundo.
There is absolutely no item build path for Aatrox, although all "generic" guides you will find will say :
Botrk/Ravenous/Randuin/SV
FIrst of all, your biggest counter is Burst/CC. Imagine the above build against these two. Lifesteal/Increased healing when you can't even Auto-Attack ? Right... USELESS !!!
Skip Botrk if they don't have 3/5 hp stacking tanks, and you are laning against a HP stacking tank.
I can make a tip for every match-up, but it would take me a whole day to write it, so i can only give you some general tips:
Tiamat early is OP for AA reset. Q + Blood Price W + Tiamat+ AA + E + R + W = 1k hp dmg @ LVL 6. That is in 3 sec. 100% chance to get a kill when they are below 50% hp.
In almost all match-ups Start E / Max E for poke. It seems you make the same mistake as 90% of my opponents and underrate my maxed E dmg in lane.
Poke poke poke with E > 50% enemy > allin = dead.
Look to push lane / get lvl advantage if they don't have good early jungler for ganks (Lee Sin/Nidalee/Elise/Xin Zhao).
Else, try to last hit, poke with E/ all-in when possible.
Whenver you are ahead : Ravenous Hydra/Trinity Force/ Swiftness (Alacrity).
Absolutely one shot everything, and in TF you will give your team an advantage that their team should have to focus absolutely all CC on you. But only do that when your passive is UP.
If you want to play safer, with this build you could still focus their frontline with W Blood Thirst (heal). You will 100% kill that tank before enemy team kills you. That is if all 5 of them will focus you.
Second :
Do not play Aatrox if you can't get ahead in lane in 90% of match-ups. Or else, you will come back here, and open a thread asking for a rework, while bashing how useless he is.

I remind you, my main was PLAT II in S5.
I am a little below my skill LVL right now, so the results are a bit over the board.
Still, 70% winrate in 56 games is decent.
My KDA (2.73) is above average, but that is due to the fact that i prefer to die a lot so that inhib goes down before min 15 (my CS can confirm that).
Sounds simple, but it's not...
You have to play lots of games on Aatrox. One of my biggest advantage right now is that i know my hard match-ups so well...
Whenever you pick Aatrox as first pick, expect one of the hardest match-ups. I recommend you to start picking Aatrox after enemy top laner is chosen.
