Lore Rant: The Waiting Game
Riot, many of us feel that recent lore has been lacking. Today, I want to explain one of the reason many of us feel this, your lore procrastinates worse than a freshman with a month-long assignment.
The Frejlord event was supposed to explain the Frejlord and get people excited about its place in the lore. Unfortunately, the event ultimately ended up creating more questions than it answered. A year and a half since then, and we still don't know what happened to Avarosa. More importantly, it's been two and a half years since Sejuani came out and we still don't know anything about her ancestor, nor about where she got her true ice bola and how.
There are just so many things in lore being set up right now under "you'll find out later," but all we get are more questions and no answers. Here's a few things Riot still has on their to-do list:
-Shurima -Icathia -Rune wars -The Frejlord (again) -General Darkwill -The Black Rose -The Shadow Isles -The Void -The Abyss (underwater)
I could list off at least 30 more examples, but I think you get the point. These aren't single champions, each of the points I have listed is an entire story arc in itself.
Riot should not write any more new stories until some of the old ones are finished and done with.
Why am I bringing up this thread now? Well, if you read Gnar's lore on the PBE, what do we find? There is no information on who Gnar is and where he came from. All we have to go on are some early teasers that suggest another large story arc to add to the list of "lore Riot promises they will one day explain but probably never will."
I get it Riot, foreshadowing lore is cool. It gives us room to theorycraft, and something to think on when we're trying to fall asleep. I get all the advantages of not finishing some stories until later, I really do. That said, it reaches a point where there's no more we can theorycraft and we just want some sort of progression.
Give us a lore event, and progress the story further this time. The Frejlord event was decent, but it only explained half the story. That would be fine in most circumstances, but considering the pile of stuff that still needs to be explained, it's obvious that the chance you have of doing a lore event for one location twice or three times is minimal at best. Give us some sort of Shurima event, or maybe a Rune Wars event. Fully explain what happened, and leave us to look forward to other parts of the lore. Once you've cut down the list a bit, then start foreshadowing new stuff. Give us the satisfaction of not only being able to guess what happens next, but also the satisfaction in learning whether we were right or wrong.
There are those of us that really love your lore Riot. We're not constantly ranting because we think it's bad, we're ranting because we see so much lost potential. I absolutely love the Shadow Isles arc, but nearly two years after the Twisted Treeline rework we still aren't much further in discovering its plot (besides knowing Thresh is gathering souls for some reason.) Give the people that are willing to read some detailed lore some attention, not just the people willing to read two lines of lore and then forgetting that there ever needs to be a follow-up. We want to give you our praise for a great story, but we can't do that until you finish it.
Tl;dr: Riot's constantly foreshadowing new stuff but never explaining what actually happens in the end. We get a bunch of half-finished stories instead of a completed lore.
