Thoughts on League after 5 years

I first started playing league about 5 years ago (Miss Fortune/Sona release) during my Freshmen year of College. At the time there wasn't really a meta (Duo Nasus/Morgana top lane, pushing for days), Chogath's passive and ult were huge, denyPlank still existed, and mana shred were all around. It was the wild west of LoL and it was terrible.

To clarify, the Game was fun at times, but it was full of terrible mechanics that made it also incredibly unfun. Also, the community was worse then than it is now believe it or not.

I wanted to create a Thank You list for Riot of thing I think they have done well, and a second list with things where I think they can improve.

Thanks for...

  1. The Tribunal. This was one of the greatest additions over the years and I can't wait for it to come back
  2. Getting rid of denyPlank, that shit was not cool
  3. Balancing top lane so that far more Champs are viable now
  4. Redoing the jungle so that it is almost back to where it was when I started, not every champ can do it well
  5. Removing dodge. I know it was a difficult choice and there was a wailing and nashing of teeth from the community, but I believe it was worth it.
  6. ARAM map
  7. LCS. The growth of eSports has been fantastic and the legitimacy it has brought to gaming in general is good
  8. Dragon/Baron makeovers, in general the look of the map overall has grown well
  9. New gp5 items (you know what I mean). I will always miss HoG, but the new ones are fun and opened up different strategies in bot lane
  10. Item Diversity. While some items are ignored forever there is a point and purpose to most of them and they can be built without being called a troll

Things to improve... (I'm going to add my suggestions as lists of complaints without thoughts aren't always useful) 1- Feedback about your Reports doing anything.

This has been around awhile and I believe stems from the feeling that reporting somebody does nothing, especially since many people about to be reported say things like "Go ahead and report me, I've been reported before it doesn't do anything" (possibly with worse grammar).

Options for solutions:

  • An email or alert when someone you reported is punished (no description of the punishment or who, just that it happened)
  • A running tally either in the client or the website or both of players reported in a given week vs players punished. Just to give people a sense of the scale and that things are happening
  • Obviously bring back the tribunal so people actively feel like they are contributing, possibly in combination with the other ideas.

2- People disconnecting from matches/lagging

I've heard a lot of hubbub lately about AFK's in ranked, or normals, complaints about 4v5's, east coast vs west coast servers etc.

Options for Solutions:

  • Ping Indicator in client before the match starts. This would allow players to have more info about whether or not they should join a game
  • Ability to run a quick (15-30 sec) stability test on the players internet connection to determine packet loss, ping variability etc and let the player decide if they should join a game
  • Add a 1:00 minute check at the start of the game, if all of the players have yet to connect yet give all players a "leave" vote that would be similar to how a surrender pops up and looks but based off of ten (really nine if 1 person has not connected) votes not 5. If the vote passes, all players leave the game and can re-queue immediately if they so desire, except the DC who would have an increasing 5 minute delay attached to their queue. This should only be applied to Ranked where you can see the other teams lineup before the match starts and you can dodge if you hate the team comp before the match starts (with the associated consequences).

3- Centralized Communication

This is one I personally tend to feel rather strongly around, and I've been trying to figure out why it bothers me and others about the lack of a single platform for finding information about the game, tracking announcements and new info, interacting with rioters etc.

The fact that I cannot find everything I want to know about champions, items, abilities, effects etc without going to a separate wiki is not good The fact that even if I check announcements and the red tracker religiously I cannot know everything new (as someone may have posted it on reddit or twitter) is not good The fact that I have no idea what is actual lore fact and what isn't right now is not good.

Options for Solutions:

This is the area I think I have the least specifics to offer, but I will try anyway.

  • Bring the wiki information onto the site.
  • As much as it is great that you are pushing to have Rioters interact with people on the platforms those users are on, the main forum seems neglected at times which is not the impression you want to create
  • If something is announced or mentioned elsewhere that gets a fair amount of attention there, it should probably be double posted here

Thank you for making it this far. Please let me know your thoughts.

I love this game and I want everybody possible to have the best time of playing it.

PS. If you notice grammar/spelling errors, please let me know and I will try to fix.

This. I like this. Although I don't think everyone should have to agree in order to leave. Maybe make it like the surrender vote where all but one person has to agree in order for it to pass? Because honestly, it's really hard to get everyone to agree on the same thing. But I really like the idea!

I'd never heard that option for AFK in ranked, I like it.

Im going to honest letting the enemy decide if im allowed to leave if my team has an afk isnt a good idea. I cant say id give up that advantage.
