What Happened To The Patch Notes Roundtable? Can You Bring It Back?

I'm kind of missing it. Sure, there was some controversy but that is not a reason to just flat out remove it.

I mean, if you make fools out of yourselves after the whole "SoloQ will definitely come back" dilemma you got yourselves in after you lied about it and then tried to make up for it by uploading a discussion video and swearing a lot I don't see how proceeding to not make any discussion roundtables ever again will make you look any better.

And let me focus on that again, making it an actual discussion roundtable. Before your last video were you invited Scarra who was highly critical of you, you just invited people who where on the same side as you.

You want to regain the trust of your players? This would be the way to do it. Don't just avoid conflict and say that everything will be fine and dandy, invite your critics to discuss with you and debunk them live on camera. If you end up putting out something bad then admit it and if your critics are wrong, invite them again to show that Riot is in fact not a company that does not know anything about their game.

I will expect there to be a series of videos for the preseason, when the big changes happen. These things take a lot of time and money to make so they only do them for big patches

How does it take a lot of time and money to make? They literally just have a few people come into a room, talk for a bit and record it. Then a little editing. It's not like they are paying the people who come on (as far as I know), so there should literally be 0 actual expense (except of course, that the cameramen and editor(s) will have to work on this for a few hours instead of other projects).

Like seriously, it's probably 2 hours for like 3 Riot employees to do this instead of like attend a meeting, maybe 2 hours for one of them to prepare discussion topics, and 2-4 hours of editing. So probably almost no lost revenue, just the overhead of paying employees to do this instead of work on another project for a day.

I do agree that they probably are waiting for the preseason changes to do another video though.

https://twitter.com/RiotScarizard/status/792172123166904320 They fly in a production team every time. It's a full set basically. So you have a team of, at minimum:

Director Producer Camera operator(s) Sound recordist(s) Editor Makeup (yes)

That team gets flown in every time there's a roundtable and so there's the money cost, and also the time and effort cost of getting everyone together. Added to that, a relatively small amount of people actually fully watched them.

Not saying they'll never do something like this again, but the resources saved by not recording these videos contributed to them being able to bring in stuff like: Ask Riot, Nexus, League podcasts, and weekly streams on Twitch (game design, playtest, art, etc).

Sounds like you are pretty much making all that up lol

  • Wouldn't need a director for a bunch of guys to come in, sit down, and talk (the loose way they b.s. around it is clear they don't do multiple takes most of the time).
  • Why would they need a producer?
  • They clearly don't have a camera operator MOST of the time, and just have 1 main camera and maybe a second for editing purposes switching between cameras
  • The sound editing type stuff is 99.9% done by the same guy editing everything else. You don't need more than one person doing it for something that simple
  • I very seriously doubt they bother with makeup for something like that.

There is no way they are flying people in to do this lol

Okay, I'm not going to try and explain how a film crew works, because you clearly already think you know.

What I posted before wasn't my opinion, it was something posted by a Rioter on the communications team several months ago. Since it was a while ago and I don't have the links, I asked him to confirm whether it was a professional film crew or not:

I very seriously doubt this takes a lot of time OR money.

It is obvious by watching the videos that they aren't scripted, and the way people talk and sometimes full on stutter and laugh and joke, they aren't done with multiple takes I would say 9 out of 10 times.

And how would it cost money? They set up 1-2 cameras, maybe a single mic if need be (can't remember if they used the simple clip on mics), and that's it.

It probably takes like 20 minutes from set up to recording, and likely they just leave most of the equipment in the room as it looks to be the same locations every time.

I think they do those for larger scope changes, which have not really been present the last few patches due to Worlds and the end of the season.

I imagine they will do something like this for the pre-season changes when they hit live (not PBE). I hope so! I enjoy them too.
