I don't understand....

Our last pick wanted lulu, so i asked our first two picks (since we were red side) if they had lulu. They didn't so i banned her seeing as shes very strong and a hot pick/ban. In retaliation even after explaining the situation, she proceeds to ban my top lane pick on the basis of "he's popular too." I was going to play jax.

Before I make this a full rage post....who was wrong. If I have a bad mindset here, I genuinely want to know why I am wrong. We lost the game due to this, and I don't want situations like this happening again.

If the player shows pick intent and you ban them out, it is considered poor sportsmanship regardless of your reasoning. Had you discussed it with the player and they understood, then it would have been acceptable.

While immature on the other player's part, they are allowed to ban as they see fit, just as you are. To put it simply, if you ban out a pick intent, be prepared to pay the consequences, whatever they end up being.

Personally I find what the other player did to be immature, but also balancing.

I concur with the first reply to this post. This situation happens in games from time to time and it's not so black and white as to only blame one person. Both parties could have acted better about this.

As mentioned, in the future you should at least voice your concerns to the other player. If they don't communicate back then you can justify the ban if you truly feel it's warranted for your team to do better, but nonetheless be prepared that other player may be salty towards you. Just outright banning a teammate's champ because they're popular or perhaps a counter to something else already picked on your team isn't sportsmanlike.

That all being said, the lulu still reacted in an immature way. Also, it sounds like they didn't make it clear in champ select that they were going to play lulu. I've been in that boat at least once myself before where I didn't pick a champion to show what I intended to play before the bans started and as a result my main was banned that game. However, I didn't flame my teammate for it because I realized I didn't do my part to make sure they knew I played that champ and would most likely pick them. Since I didn't communicate that I couldn't entirely fault them for banning that champ.
