A little secret I have learned after two weeks in gold

Ok so.. this is going to sound like common sense but until you accept these two factors you will not rank up to where you want to be. I am going to speak from gold elo or lower (although the idea does apply to higher ranks as well). First, Gold players are not much better than silver players (like at all). This leads us to the big "secret".

Second and the "big secret" is this game is all about grinding and averages. The only way to rank up is to play games and grind. To rank up higher you need to play on average at a certain elo. Once you play enough games and perform at that elo you will rank up to that rank. You will have trolls, afkers, bad games, great games, but none of that matters. The only thing you can control is what you do every game. So play your best, learn from your mistakes, and rank up.

After 2.5 years of grinding and finally getting gold I thought "omg I am finally here now its time for ranked to start to be competitive and hard". Well... not so much. Granted, games are a little harder and a little more competitive but generally speaking we all still suck. There are many mistakes made each game, there are ragers, afkers, feeders and blah blah blah blah blah etc. The only difference is these players "on average" play better than those at a little lower elo. What this means is players cs will be a little higher, the mini map will be watched a little more, objectives will be taken and contested a little more, etc.

So my personal experience is this. Stuck in silver 2 for 2 years. Finally wake up and decide to play my best role and best champ Morgana support. I have a roughly 60% winning percentage as her in this role. Start to do that while continuing to learn the game and from my mistakes, and also playing other champs I have confidence in on other roles and go from a roughly 49% W/L percentage to 51%. That difference is silver 2 to gold 5. Only thing changing is playing on average at a little higher elo while also playing champs and positions I have a fairly decent win percentage in. I changed my mindset from "ugg feeders afkers, blah blah blah in my last 3 games" to "ah shit that game went poorly going to take a break". Next game "alright what can I do this game to try and get the win". You have to forget about the last game and only focus on the next game. The past is the past learn from it and move on.

Well said. It is amazing that people just cannot understand that the 'feeders' and 'afk-er's exist at any Elo, and just because they cannot carry themselves out does not mean where they are is 'Elo Hell'. If you wake up in Bronze, the real person to look at is in the mirror.

This is true. I finally realized this and I was able to grind from Bronze 5 all the way to silver 3 in a little over a month (I also had a week where my wife and kids were gone visiting parents while I worked, so a lot more free time) and I did it by playing the champion I was best with. Which, at the time, just happened to be skarner.

ranking up is mostly about average win rate and grind. You have to play LOTS of games. As long as you are winning more than you are losing, you will rank up eventually. I stopped playing ranked when life got busy and all of my loses (literally, like 6 losses and a ton of wins) were in my promo matches. It was kind of funny, but I would go undefeated into promos and then poof! 2 straight losses. :P

this is very true. as u climb the ladder mechanics get better less mistakes are made but a kill in a higher elo is worth more i would think not just for u farming but for farm denial. for example i am in bronze and have a ton of flaws but i have a friend i know in real life who i 1v1 with who is diamond 5 and climbing. the main difference between us is the positioning and how well he farms. he out farms me hard but as soon as he gets a kill on me and comes back into lane he can cs for free because the pressure is too high and me being bronze am not perfect under tower farming. then there are small things like he pays more attention to summoners i know when mine are up but dont check his often enough so i go to all in him and he has a last second heal and kills me then casually farms

I disagree with your observation that silver players are as good as gold players.

Here's how tier works (from my perspective):

Bronze 3 and below: Computer can't run league, plays at 500+ ping, or mentally slow Bronze 2 through Silver 2: Computer has occasional freezing, plays at 150+ ping, simply bad at the game. Silver 1 through Gold 2: Casual players who has some brains but simply plays for fun and never gets better. Gold 1 through Plat 2: Same as above but with more competitive edge; strives to be diamond but don't have the time. Plat 1 through Diamond 1: Have a lot of time for league with little potential to improve. Master/Challengers: potential to play at Pro level.

*These are from my observation of having friends in Bronze 4/5, Bronze 1/2, Silver 3/4, Silver 1, all levels of Gold/Plat, Low Diamond, and Masters. Observation also includes various steamers and simply playing against players at the various tiers. The descriptions are GENERAL and does not apply to every specific players. Note, those who try to criticize this comment by applying it to every.single.individual.player needs to get a life.

Also: while grinding plays a role in ranking up; there is still a very clear reason why some people can hit higher tiers with significantly lower amount of games than others. A player who can be gold in 10 games is definitely better than a player who makes gold after 200 games.

I usually do that towards the end of each season. Pick a strong meta champ, get really good with them, and ask for that spot as often as I can and climb up to gold for the rewards. Then I can go back to filling and playing an array of champions again.

Nothing really changes when you get to gold. People don't get better, trolls don't disappear and everyone can still play poorly. Honestly, what you want to do is just play the game and enjoy yourself, have fun and honestly that is what matters. Instead of playing to win, play to get better. Take a loss and learn from it. Bronze/Silver/Gold/Plat doesn't matter what you are to be honest.Ahri

I play a lot.. like too much, have good ping, but I didn't start trying to climb until later last year. Before that I just played "meh whatever"
