I learned something cool about how smart Riot was today
Look at that. That is the Workman keyboard layout, an alternative to the QWERTY keyboards most of us have.
The middle row is intended for people to rest their fingers on, but the others are highlighted because of finger preference. Specifically, index fingers prefer to curl inwards, while ring and middle fingers prefer to move outwards.
I saw that, and immediately connected it to league. The index finger curls inwards for the summoner spells and the smart ping, while the ring and pointer fingers go upwards for 234 item commands. (At least with my layout). I think it's really cool that Riot paid attention to that when deciding on the default keys.
