Is it fair to place new players in high silver elo when its their first time getting ranked?

Just had a game with 3 silver 1s on my team somehow. I'm not saying silver 1s are bad by any means but fuck, these people each had less than 150 normal wins and like 20-50 ranked games total. vs. a Plat 5 with 1000 something normals, 2 gold 2s with 1500 plus normals. Like sure the MMR on our team could have been somehow similar but the level of experience on each team was no where close.

Me: Zilean Gold 2, 309 ranked wins, 1296 normal wins. Tristana Silver 1, 20 ranked wins, 160 normal wins Orianna Gold 5, 41 ranked, 24 normal Garen Silver 1, 6 ranked wins, 185 normal Shaco Silver 1, Ranked 94, normal 517

VS.

Sejuani gold 5, Ranked 145, normal 512 Swain Gold 3, ranked 128, normal 818 Ezreal Plat 5, ranked 232, normal 1016 Brand Gold 2, ranked 108, normal 1597 Alistar Gold 5, ranked 143, Normal 1912

Too me it just seemed like we were doomed in match making. Discuss title.

To be fair, mid silver is the average, so doing relatively well in placements would place you in silver 2 or 1.

If you want my honest opinion as someone who has gone through each rank of silver/gold, S3-G5 are the same.
