I have a nearly level 30 friend that doesn't know the difference between AP and AD.

My friend is level 26 I believe, and still doesn't understand itemization in the slightest.
He's been playing Shaco, building the AP enchant, then building IE and Ravenous Hydra.
He saw video of me playing Singed Jungle, but follows the recommended page and skips a jungle item.
Saw video of AD Soraka, and since he doesn't understand ability scaling, only builds her AD now.
What does this say about our new player experience?
