I think most lore fans are just numb, they can't really feel much anything. I go back onto the lol wiki to read champion judgments every now and again, still better then anything they've put out recently. (which isn't much anyways.)

For the most part that is true, but Sion's rework came with some juicy tidbits of lore-y goodness. Anything that gives more detail about The Black Rose (and especially Jericho Swain) is always nice.

biomaster1 votes

Yeah that was nice, but again still so vague about it. For example it was only my keen eye and intuition that pointed out that Vladimir was in the ritual. Lore wise however it isn't even mentioned anywhere that he's black rose. (makes sense but hardly a given.)

Laughing Fish2 votes

Very true. More information about Vladimir's role in the Black Rose would be appreciated. As for the rest of them, however, I think the Black Rose is one of the few places that work better with mystery (Although Rito appears convinced that mystery is good for every single champion!). Part of the appeal of Swain is you know what he is doing, but not exactly how he is doing it. In many ways it is the opposite of how Rito is handling everything else, as they normally give us actions with no strategy or point(for example, we know Kalista is a spirit of vengeance, but why is she here is unknown). On a side note, there is clearly something deeply wrong with that bird. I think the bird may be in charge, and that Swain himself is a puppet. But that is an entirely different discussion.

Honestly i totally ship Swain x Beatrice (the bird). I feel the story goes, Swain gets sent to kill Jarvan the 4th but he instead gets his leg broken by said prince. Jarvan leaves him for dead and Swain his doomed to die. But then Beatrice finds him. For unknown reasons she gives him a second chance and now stays by his side. I personally feel it's some sort of love at first sight. But could very easily be some sort of brainwash or mind control.

Laughing Fish2 votes

That is far too happy for the Noxus. Not enough death, torture, blood, and dark magic.

biomaster1 votes

I don't know, I always felt Noxus wasn't as evil as they made it out to be. Swain hates Jarvan but understandably so. I'd be more surprised if he didn't hate the leader of his rival country. Talon is just an assassin, he doesn't act spiteful or rude. I don't think anyone sees katarina as evil or a villain. Noxus just kinda takes a different idea to strength. They see nothing wrong with assassination and yes those zaunite war machines do knock them down a level as far as my respect of them goes. But all in all they simply made morally ambiguous decisions during war. It's for the same reason I can't blame them that I kinda hate Demacia. They aren't any different than Noxus. They honour strength and love battle just as much as the Noxians do. Otherwise why would their kind have such militaristic garb. They just put such a self righteous spin to it I feel sick. I like Quinn and Shyvana alot. But I can't stand Jarvan garen lux and especially Fiora. "Oh know my dad made me look bad" = First world problems. Sickening part is it feels like they don't take the fight seriously. If you look at Noxus they focus pretty much all their attention into the war effort. Meanwhile we have Demacians who seem to be parading around more than anything else. TL;DR Basically Noxus= cool rogue like nation Demacia= disgusting pageantry and high horses.

Laughing Fish2 votes

Noxus as a whole isn't really evil. The Black Rose on the other hand is. Sure, Talon and Katarina are just soldiers serving their nation well. But Swain assassinated his own leader, and was one of the guys behind the league starting a war between Demacia and Noxus over the jungles. While a lot of people were arrested or assassinated for corruption, Swain was not. all three factions took some bad hits, but Swain was willing to do it as he gained personal power. And the other members of the black rose are just as evil. Look at Vladiimir for example. He was just a serial killer, and now is a serial killer with magic.

As for Demacia: Yes, they are far more violent than they would have you believe. But overall their way of life is protecting many people. Their crime rates are very low, they have large amounts of wealth, and appear to have plenty of food/water. Obviously they do plenty wrong, but I would still say they one of the most moral factions. As for not taking the fight seriously, that is mostly just Fiora. Garen has been training his entire life, and fully expects that he will give his life for Demacia eventually. He hasn't even met his own sister because of how dedicated he is. Jarvan IV's willpower and dedication is unmatched. Even when Swain flooded his mind with black magic in J4's league judgment, he could not stop J4 from fighting. Even as Swain's birds ate J4's flesh, Jarvan continued to use what strength he had to choke the life from Swain. It's not that they take the fight less seriously, it is that they don't see the fight as personal, whereas the Noxus does. Demacia seens this as Good vs. Evil, whereas the Noxus sees this as Me vs You.

TL;DR While The Noxus Empire is morally ambiguous, The Black Rose is completely evil. Demacia, while hypocritical, still watches out for and cares about its people more then anyone else.

A lot of those points hold true, my only correction is that he didn't necessarily assassinate his own leader. Correct me if I'm wrong but the previous Noxian leader (the guy that had the life extending rings) died in a battle with Demacia. Then the position was up for grabs and the now dead leader's son and Darius were the prime candidates. As the story goes Darius ends up backing Swain for unknown reasons, more cynical viewers might say he was hypnotized or somehow threatened (can you even threaten the dunk master?) but I think both Swain and Darius wanted the same Noxus and that he understood Swain was the better thinker of the 2 and more likely to achieve it. A couple of months of political intrigue later The leader's son finally gets fed up and basically challenges Swain to a fight to the death to see who gets to lead Noxus. Swain beat him fair and square and keeping with the promised death promptly had Darius execute him. Nothing even dishonorable let alone evil.

I really like Vladimir despite his being a complete serial killer. It's naïve of me since his league judgment and every other time they bring him up reminds us that his personality is a façade and he only wants to draw more blood for the sake of blood and self amusement. But I kinda like him for the same reason I like Shaco and Warwick. Together they make my 3 favorite champs (3 standard horror movie antagonists the werewolf, vampire and masked murderer) and more importantly I get this anti-hero feel from them. "But bio, that's BS Warwick is a human trafficker, Shaco's a more malicious Deadpool at best and evil's incarnate at worst and Vladimir is an aforementioned Serial killer that knows magic now.

I know, I know. I just have this indescribable feeling that none of them would be opposed to being the hero. If for some reason there was some sort of call by the world from a nation, race, or some other outside force they actually would try and help, to do right, and save the day. For example we all know Vladimir isn't exactly picky of who's blood he sees running, so of course if someone could provide some sort of bonus like (kill them, be a hero, AND satisfy your need for murder) he would probably go for it. Shaco would probably get a kick out of it. WW is probably the least justifiable but I totally think if he was needed he'd answer the call.
I realize I'm kinda getting away from lore and more about champion preference but pls, indulge me.

As for whether or not Swain assassinated his leader is a matter of debate. Officially, Demacia killed him, under the orders of Jarvan IV. But Swain is believe to have been the reason he was hunted and found, with some people thinking that it was LeBlanc posing as J4 at the time. Although this is unproven, J4 is described as being distant and strange around the same time, not even letting Garen (his closest friend and ally) know what was happening. He also works with Katarina a lot during this time, something that would be very strange indeed for a Demacian prince. But back to Swain, what he did would almost certainly be labeled as treason. And as for Darius, I really think Swain hypnotized him. Several commanding officers just happened to join Swain, something that is unlikely for anyone, let alone a culture that values personal strength that much. The only ones that Swain hasn't been able to control are fellow dark mages like the previous leader, and Jarvan. I blame that bird. I think the Bird is a demon and swain is his puppet. This would explain Swain's complete lack of a physical response to emotion (despite clearly thinking in an emotional way), and the fact that he does not appear to feel pain.

biomaster1 votes

Now that's just silly. Love is strange and therefore as simple an explanation as God made it happen. There's no real proof or disproof for it. That said your idea is a conspiracy theory. I must admit I forgot how they mentioned Jarvan's unusual behavior during that time but honestly if it was Leblanc why would Jarvan not say "Hey, I didn't do any such thing." At the very least you would expect confusion from him. And that quote simply states Swain designed the high office, nothing about assassination. Plus note he says my secrets NOW. Suggesting they were Darkwill's secrets before.

Laughing Fish2 votes

The thing is Swain has always been both highly ambitious, and dishonest. It is his character. And if he worked his way up until there was one man above him, it would be extremely out of character for him to not attempt to bring down the last man higher than he is. Let us not forget this is the man that took on another identity as some low level guy in bildgewater, and worked his way up as a summoner just to reach J4. As for Leblanc pretending to be Jarvan, that is highly unlikely. I was just trying to use that as a way to show that the corruption and trickery was so deep that even something that insane is possible. I just didn't explain my intention very well. I think Swain was simply intelligent enough to predict J4's actions, and used them to his advantage.

Also, the high office he is talking about is the office of Grand General. Swain is saying that Darkwill's son never would have been there if Swain hadn't made it so. Why is that true? Darkwill had stopped aging. Had Darkwill not been assassinated, it is possible that he would have ruled for eternity. So Swain is saying he is the one that made is possible for Darkwill's son to take charge, heavily suggesting he played a major role is Darkwill's demise.

That perspective makes sense actually. I don't see Swain the same way you do though. For me I always thought Swain was the pinnacle of what a Noxian could be. If Noxus was literally just the strongest live I'd label them "dumb jocks" and move on. But it's because they honour strength in ALL it's forms that I love them. When ever I see that tip in loading screen I just think of Swain. The crippled man that managed to work his way to the top of a power hungry nation and now manages to hold the reigns with a powerful mind and little else. As far as dishonesty goes Ithink that's a little off. Sure there's a lot we don't know about him or his actions, but that doesn't make him dishonest that just means he's an enigma. For example no one has a clue what Shaco even is, yet you wouldn't call him a liar because no one as ever had the chance to ask him, or if he was asked he doesn't answer, but he doesn't lie either. I don't think anyone has asked Swain for or about "the truth". Essentially I believe Swain is strategic, tactful, and overall smart about what he does, how he does it, and when he does it. That doesn't make him dishonest, or even deceitful.

Laughing Fish2 votes

He lied about being a summoner, even managing to trick the league. And used this to try and assassinate Jarvan IV. He works with the Black Rose often, and he transforms into a demon. Let me say that again, He transforms into a demon! The man is clearly dishonest. That is kind of his thing. He is the king of lies.

biomaster1 votes

Remember how I ship Swain x Beatrice? For me he doesn't transform to a demon so much as they basically do a generic anime cliché of fusing there bodies together with the power of their loving bond to defeat their foes. (also I totally think their getting freaky during said formation, those miniature crows got to come from somewhere.)

just finished reading Jarvan's league judgment, Swain's perspective perfectly fits my view on Demacia as a whole.

Laughing Fish1 votes

This is from the journal of Grand General Swain (from Sion's lore)

A shame Keiran failed to enjoy his father's longevity, not that he'd have been able to enjoy the high office at all had I not designed it. The Grand General's chambers harbor many secrets. My secrets now.

This suggest he was behind Darkwill's assassination.

Is HER you pulse-challenged leech, Beatrice will rip you apart before I finish this speech!

sorry about that, fixed.

It's LEECH you high horse Demacian. Swain's ravenous flock shall devour you before this is read.

People care this much about the lore?

biomaster1 votes

ikr, how could we possibly fall in love with a bunch of unrealistic stereotypical rpg tropes. Honestly I myself can't explain it. It's basically the same epic sauce as smash bros only their all from the same universe. I really loved it, still do and I'm even writing some fanfic myself to appease my hunger for lore
