Actually the above formula was discovered by Leibniz, who proved it geometrically. However, the Indian mathematician Madhava proved that the inverse tangent function has a MacLauren series of x - x^3/3 + x^5/5 + ... ((-1)^n)/(2n+1).

Since arctan(1) = pi/4, we can plug in 1 to the series to get 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...

Multiplying by 4 gives 4(1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...), which is equal to pi.
