The intention is that it keeps the meta moving. If they just left the game alone it would get Stale pretty fast.

Not even remotely true, melee took over 10 years for a solid meta to ever come out and that is with over 100 less characters.

While I see your point, that's not really a fair comparison. Melee has WAY less players/hours spent playing/people watching and learning from pro play. And moba vs fighter...hardly share any similarities...

League would get stale faster without change. But I also think enough change happens on its own through balance and new champs and items and whatnot that they don't need to intentionally throw a wrench in it just for the sake of making it different.

Lets use dota instead as our comparison, it gets updated about once a year, and the meta still constantly shifts inbetween patches as people figure things out/try new things, and then they do a huge patch and it repeats itself, but the meta is never stale.

Yeh, using dota's a much better comparison. And like I said, I agree the game doesn't need change just for the sake of change. Balance updates and new champs are enough to shift the meta on it's own.

EG: New Champ comes out. Champ X isn't very popular right now, but it counters New Champ pretty well. Champ X becomes popular. So then Champ Y that counters Champ X also becomes popular, and so on, till eventually it gets all fairly solved. But by that point New Champ2 or balance has happened and shifts it all around again.

LoL does have a tendency to get stale faster than dota though. For 1 'lanes' and 'roles' aren't really as set in dota as LoL, so it's a little more limited on 'things to try out.' But there's still a lot to try out, even within those limitations.

I mean, hell, Veigar was fairly untouched for a long time then some pro mastered the snap cast cage thing and people freaked till Veigar had to go through like 3 months of balancing to not be 'broken.' But..his cage was like that from day 1, just no one had figured it out /gotten that good with it. So yes, stuff will still evolve even with 0 change.

Dota actually gets updates pretty often.

Massive, preseason level updates are pretty rare, as are hero releases, but that's not to say that the game doesn't get updated.

They don't hesitate to add in new things on a whim.

They added Bloodthorn (Crit item with a zed ult and silence attatched) in a regular old patch. They added Scan (think a global version of our sweeper lens, but only for players) in a normal patch. They added Hurricane Pike (Global Auto range for a few attacks) in a patch like any other. The same can be said for infused raindrops, tomes of knowledge, etc.

Also, a two major reasons why Dota doesn't get stale are that the meta is incredibly flexible and that the map itself is so incredibly intricate (mostly due to elevations and trees).

Dota 2 has major patches about 3-4 times a year though. There are a ton of minor patches worth of balance changes that would amount to about one average LoL patch worth of balance.
