the japanese and chinese ones are often human/animal shapeshifters that are generally notorious pranksters, like tanuki spirits and sometimes nekomata. the fox ones generally have more evil intentions than the tanuki and are more like to be thieves or soul/essence stealers than the other two whom are more likely to be just plain pranksters.

the chinese and koreans feature nekomata and tanuki more than the fox while the kitsune is very common in japan.
