Mine would be a mix of both.
Who would be so crazy for a new release champ to play them 12 hours straight to not only grind out mastery 5, but then 2 S- or better and then 3 S or better games?
The Mastery unlocks aren't the issue, since over the course of those games you'll easily get enough IP to buy the champion shards required.
