I noticed this too, funny what happens to people when you give them a little power. In fact there's been multiple studies and documentaries that delve into the jailer/prisoner (authority/non-authority) relationship, one of the more notable ones is the Stanford experiment:

Diffusion of responsibility is part of the terminology describing the actions of individuals carrying out acts that go against their morals simply because they're told to, some people feel ok using their superiors as proxy for their responsibility. This explains how wars happen even though many agree it's bad.
