The opportunity cost on hurricane needs to be lowered

As it is, item 3085 isn't a bad item in itself, it just has too high of an opportunity cost for most people to use it. It's ranged only and AS only, so the amount of champions who can make any use of it before the passive is limited.

Aside from Teemo and maybe Kayle (long shot of Orianna), I can't think of any AP champs who'd want it. So you are limited to getting it on a few ADCs who build AD and on hit effect items. But on hit builds are pretty weak. And most ADCs want critical hits which the bolts don't apply. And if you are getting an AS item, something in the zeal line or Bork takes precedence.

Don't get me wrong, I like the basic concept of the item, it's just not good enough on its own for most. People don't want a lot of AS from one item that does nothing else. The item has a big problem in that it also isn't rush worthy. If you just rush a hurricane, you are setting yourself back because it don't do enough on its own. It only works when you have a few items. Which often means you are ahead.

I can think of a few things for fixing it:

  1. Swap the daggers in the build for long swords and give it AD damage (or make it a bow and a pickaxe).
  2. Give the hurricane some movespeed boost so people will feel like they can take it instead of a zeal item.
  3. Let the bolts crit... for 10% bonus damage instead of 100% bonus damage.

I think it's an option for late game wave clear, but usually the ADC isn't the one doing that and if you look at the cost and the items you get for it, it's not like you can build it instead of something else it shares a common item with (the bow just doesn't build into enough good things).

Agreed I sorely wish I could look at this item seriously outside of ARAMs. As it is, it just feels like item 3087 does the same job better with a much smoother build curve. The same could be said of item 3131.

Yeah, Shiv is a nice zeal item with movespeed and crit. It gives up pushing power, but has a lot to offer in return. Plus if you build zeal, you can change to PD or TF if you want or the situation warrants it. With a recurve bow, you are pretty much screwed for options.

Right. I can't think of a single case where anyone could get a Recurve for Hurricane and then switch it to a Wit's End. Not even Teemo and Kayle get that anymore, right?

Kayle might if she's building tanky. But I don't think Wit's End would be her go to MR item. Not that it's horrible, just not good enough for what she would need out of it.

Hurricane is a very high-risk item because in order to use it to its full effectiveness, you need to be in range of not just one enemy, but two or three. I think the reward should be scaled to match. If you increased the attack speed to 100 it might hit the "crazy attack speed" theme they're going for. The other ideas by OP were good too.

Minions count as enemies. That's one of my problems with it. The time when you could best justify it: laning, is the time when it'd be at its worst.

I never gave much thought to reworking Runaan's for more common use. It always felt like a niche item (like thornmail) that you only built for certain situations or with certain champs. It synergizes really well with Caitlyn's passive allowing her to headshot every 3rd hit, and it proc's the slow from Ashe's q on all targets at normal mana cost. I've seen Teemo's make good use of it.

Tweaking it might not be that bad an idea.

I actually like the item for using on Jinx personally because it work well with her Switcheroo. Fishbones fires 3 AEO Rockets which makes it an awesome late game team fight item for her. Teemo also makes good use of it because of his poinson along with Varus and Caitlyn. Truth be told though your right it really only serves a purpose on a few champions and it might need some slight adjustments but all in all its a viable decent item for at least a few people.

Yeah, a few champs can make use of Hurricane, but I don't think enough can right now in its current state. I don't want it to be a top tier, must get on everyone item, but I think it's got room to be in a better spot.

My problem with the Caitlyn example is that in 99% of good fights for her, she'll never be in Hurricane's range (as her AA range is higher than that of the bolts).

Maybe if the range of the item matched the range of the champion wielding it?

No, the bolts are the same range as her AA range. The bolts are only impeded by the distance around her target. 3 targets at 650 range will all be hit. The bolts will also hit closer targets, but likely will not hit targets that are farther than that.

Interesting. I remember in it's early days, I saw a discussion that said that it was a particular mismatch for Cait and Vayne (because of the special code for her Silver Bolts) and I definitely remember the reasoning for Cait being because she should be too far to use it.

Suppose I misunderstood what that meant.

item 3085 is heavily, heavily underrated. It is a great item that is not fully appreciated for the glory that it brings.

Any time anyone tries to say that it's terrible, I just shake my head.

I like it, but it's the sort of item you need to preplan and build around. Plus if you are going that route, you are kind of committed to making the item.

If you are thinking hey I'll just insert it into my normal build, you are doing it wrong. Because it can change the way you approach ADCing, it has to be given more consideration than that.
