I strongly dislike the changes to Nautilus' lore.

Nautilus' old lore was that he was betrayed by his shipmates, and an evil power fused him with a diving suit of armor. So he carries the burden of his grudge in the form of an anchor, the one clue he has of finding those who betrayed him. His joke had a double meaning, "Sometimes this anchor just weighs me down" (If he let go of his thirst for vengeance he wouldn't have had to trudge through the depths).

His new lore is this: All know the tales; all pay the Bilgewater tithe. Since time immemorial, Nautilus has roamed the dark waters off the coast of the Blue Flame Isles, dragging impious sailors to their doom. The armored goliath strikes without warning, his inexorable footfalls churning the waters, before swinging his enormous anchor upward to shatter mast and keel alike. He then pulls the flotsam beneath the waves to appease the wrath of the Bearded Lady.

So now all he is is an evil sea monster? Do all of the "evil" champions have to have any identity and meaning behind their character stripped away, turned into generic cartoon villains?

I'm 90% certain the lore team ever since the shurima patch has been a bunch of contracted fan fic writers from tumblr

You're right dude.

A Rioter posted in one of the threads recently (I forget which) and pointed out they can't always tread the line fans expect as, quite often, fans will take headcanon as legit intent on Riot's part.

Vayne for example was never intended to be 'Batman', yet it's what the community seemed to define her as for almost no reason. I believe Viktor was also mentioned to be much more black and white than the community made him out to be.

Also now Naut has a reason for his Harrowing appearance years ago, where he solo's an entire army to protect people he shouldn't logically care about. Now? He's allied with Illaoi's patron, and Illaoi stands against the Shadow Isle forces- the connection makes sense. This is a good thing.

They don't even say his previous lore didn't happen, it's simply not mentioned. Riot's lore summaries are just that, summaries.

Friendly Ram11/23/2017, 3:48:10 AM14 votes

But naughty naut still has his emotes in game so i'm just gonna ignore the new lore.

OceanicEyes11/23/2017, 5:20:02 AM14 votes

I'd be down for a mix or both honestly. Left and abandoned in the depths, but the eldritch power that made him who he is was Nagakabouros.

Tèrminus11/23/2017, 3:38:13 AM10 votes

Oh look, the fucking retards at Riot fail at something YET AGAIN.

Is anyone even surprised anymore?

I don't like to just hate on them, but that's all anyone else does because Riot does nothing but fuck everything up constantly.

All this negativity just makes me want to smash my computer sometimes. Fuck having my own opinion if it's going to be wrong, I'll just hate everything like everyone else does.

To be fair, there's nothing in here that prevents his old lore from still existing. He had to have come to the Bearded Lady somehow

ZenithEevee11/23/2017, 8:01:28 AM7 votes

To be fair, They're buttfucking a lot of lore.

I wont be surprised when they re-write Riven to just be some king-arthor ripoff of finding her weapon in a stone, But after bringing it back to Noxus it shattered because "Fuck Riven, If jax cant have an actual weapon, We'll give Riven a broken one"

Wyrmblade11/23/2017, 7:47:15 AM7 votes

There is no universe in which "surprising" people with uncalled for retcons to their favorite champion is acceptable.

Jaspers11/23/2017, 10:20:55 AM5 votes

This is new lore? But it's like 4 sentences and doesn't even have an origin? That's not lore, that's more of an abbreviation of what he is now.

Is his main lore actually changing? His origin? What he is now, and what he does now for the Bearded Lady may be a result of his original lore of being betrayed and turned into what he is, it's just his actions as a result of his transformation might be simplied here while he is actually far more complex that a full bio and story might expand on.

300k + nautilus mastery worth of cringe right now, def need to add the previous lore to this.

Kloqdq11/23/2017, 2:38:44 PM4 votes

Well it actually makes sense honestly? If Naut was betrayed by his shipmates, than he would have good reason to drag sailors to their doom as a vengeful spirit like being. If you combine old and new, it actually makes a LOT of sense overall.

Automatis11/23/2017, 7:11:43 AM4 votes

maybe his old lore was what really happened and the new lore is what modern runeterrans think of him, like a chronology

Audhulma11/23/2017, 6:13:14 PM2 votes

They pulled this shit with skarner too when they released the shurima update. Think they finally went back and retconned the retcon, just took for fucking ever.

Jamochawoke11/24/2017, 7:15:32 AM2 votes

Nautilus just got Xerath'ed.

TwitchInMyPants11/23/2017, 12:51:43 PM2 votes

They responded to the Varus leak but not this

Apparently the snippet about Varus isn't very contextual to who he is in the new story, so maaaaaaaaaybe its the same with Naut.... Though reading this bio it looks like they took Nautilus from a tragic monster looking for vengeance for his past death to some generic sea monster.

Does he still say stuff like "forward...forward..." and "I will NOT. REST."

I kind of liked the whole "is supposedly evil but is only evil because people betrayed him so he's misunderstood but still awesome"

You know, kind of like Urgot? He only entered the league to get revenge on the guy who literally cut him in half, to be repaired by the likes of Viktor ... then they reworked him

First Zac now Nautilus... Dammit. Stop tearing down the stories we know!

Strawberrycocoa11/23/2017, 5:59:40 AM1 votes

I mean... I really don't see how "guy who got cursed by dark sea magic" is any better OR any worse than "ageless monster who hunts prey for his master". Before he had the Rammus problem, he was just a random guy some random misfortune fell upon. Now he at least fits into one of the area stories a bit.

mkyner11/23/2017, 6:17:17 PM1 votes

Where are you getting this new lore from? His page in the Universe section still has the story about being abandoned by his shipmates.

NastyMcOutplay11/23/2017, 8:17:39 PM1 votes

this change is very bad

Kairoptra11/23/2017, 8:53:47 PM1 votes

Well, they might be doing the same thing as the Varus lore; we need to wait for the full bio for context. Remember what happened with Viktor’s lore update and don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched.

MeDicenWera11/24/2017, 5:25:47 AM1 votes

I think you can choose to still believe in the old lore. Lore is so irrelevant in LoL anyways, I think you can choose the one that you like the most as canon, there's never a situation in which lore matters anyway.

Jerry SeinfeId11/23/2017, 1:50:50 PM1 votes

I'm gonna hope for the best and assume this is just his in client bio. With his full bio on the universe page, I wouldn't mind the league in his story being replaced with the bearded lady. If he becomes a generic seamonster of legend i'll be sad tbh.

Sweet Tennessee11/23/2017, 7:24:18 AM1 votes

I say just wait for the storiesto come since they put all the exact details into them and give a brief summary to give an idea of what the champ is

TheRiddum11/23/2017, 5:48:20 AM1 votes

How about ziggs lore? His old lore was extremely in depth...New lore just a synopsis of his comic
