What the hell is up with OE gains from the event?!

I have seen a few people on the boards being all happy that they got thousands of orange essences in the skin orbs and such, and have even been told by a close friend of mine that he got 1000. I opened one and got 95 orange essences. What's up with the awfully random gains?! This feels shitty as hell.
