Skins aren't worth ten dollars each

Sure, some 1350 skins have a few added particles but most are the same quality of a 975 skin. I've bought lots of skins over my years, don't get me wrong, but this is getting sort of ridiculous.

It always felt good to buy a few skins and then buy one with the leftover RP you had. Can't do that anymore. I have a feeling the new price of skins in Season 8 is going to be 1820.

Just use the default skin if you can't afford it. Skins aren't a must in this game.

Yeah but people buy them and it rakes in tons of money so there's no reason for them not to charge that much.

i find 10 dollars for a skin pretty damn steep... then again i have like 300 something dollars spent on my account so they must be doing something right

We're talking about cosmetic stuff here

I buy skins like DJ Sona because theyre great and the design behind it is extensive, so I know Im buying a true work of art. I buy skins like Sherwood Forest Ashe or Warden Jax because I want options and these also look good.

The relationship of all the skin prices is that theyre optional

Jamaree9/20/2017, 3:08:51 AM9 votes

Don't buy them then, just play the game and wait until you open something you like.

They are worth whatever people are willing to pay for them.

Well at least there are sales and hextech chests.

I really hit me when I saw the new Star Guardian bundle, costing over $60 for just 5 skins, some icons and a ward. Honestly, how does this "contect" measure up to the same value as a brand new game of the same price.

But considering people are willing to spend the money, I don't see Riot changing anything anytime soon.

I think the sales prices are 'calculated' into normal prices.

Those that can't wait or have a lot of money can buy them immediately, others will simply wait for sales.

I rarely buy full priced skins, so I can't really expect Rito to lower the prices. They can't to that and keep the sales going.

My friend and I talked about this last night. I think we both agree that the pricing of 1350 is becoming way to common and is marking skins like Pentakill Kayle way to much even if it has slight animation work. Consider it like this, most of the 975 skins we have got this year, have the same level of work and quality as the 1350s, but aren't 1350. It really makes you think and wander what is with their pricing. Like a good question to ask is how does their pricing work overall? What details the difference between a 975 or a 1350? Really there isn't any real tell I can easily see that shows it.

The Knight Kled skin, Festive Anviva, Chem Tryn, Karthus Lightbane, Pug'maw, Moo Cow Alistar are just some example and holy are these skins amazing. Yet you look at some of the 1350s and they are the same quality as these skins. Why are these then 975 but these other skins 1350? I have no idea.

The market value of the skin is something that is determined by the demand from the public and their willingness to pay for it moreso than what we personally deem it is valued at. If nobody bought high priced skins, Riot would correct the price point to the most profitable cost. It's not great to pay the same amount of money for a new hat for teemo as it would be to get a completely new game on the steam store in my opinion (or 20 tacos) but I can't argue with basic economics.

he is right skins in league, like cosmetics in many other games, are hugely overpriced compared to their production cost.

The problem is that there is simply no incentive for most companies to lower their prices, as there is no guarantee that the expected boost in sales will compensate for the loss of income per skin.

Imagine riot reduces all its prices of skins by 50% or something to bring it closer to their production cost, which sounds fairer, but now you need 50% more people that buy this skins to make the same amount of profit. And now you have the think about how many different types of consumers you have, and if your new approach sounds reasonable under these conditions.

There are people: -that never buy skins no matter how low/high the prices are -people that buy a lot of skins already even with high prices -people that only buy skins now and then -people that only buy skins for their mains

  • and a few more

And now remember that your loss in revenue by reducing skin prices is guaranteed, while your expected boost in sales is uncertain. There is only a small chance that the rise in sales will outweigh the reduced prices and your aim is to make more profit than before, because just going even wouldn´t be worth the risk.

And there you have it. This is why we can´t have nice things for reasonable prices, because no matter how high these prices are enough people are willing to pay them anyway.

riot relies on skins to make any kind of profit. the game is free they have to pay server space, employees, building rental, and a ton of other stuff associated with running a buisiness

A product's worth is determined by how much consumers are willing to pay for it. So long as the majority of consumers is content paying $10 for a skin, then that skin is, in fact, worth $10.

"Worth" is simply the imaginary price point on an economic chart where the business' willingness to sell meets the consumer's willingness to purchase.

I 100% agree. cosmic dusk xayah is not worth 1350 rp. 975 is far more reasonable.

Its easier to gain free skins now, thats a reason more skins are pricier. And the quality is better.

Captain Aishi9/21/2017, 7:23:04 AM1 votes

last time I bought 10$ of RP, I didn't have enough to buy a 1350 skin... so no skins aren'T worth 10$, they're worth more obviously :P

Fairyfleur9/20/2017, 2:04:44 PM1 votes

975 skins have a lot of what 1350's do now, but don't come with new sound effects or unique homeguard animations.
